Full Version: I Have A Few Questions

I'd like to have a snail. But first I have a few (common) questions.

How big do they get (I'd like to have an apple snail)

What type of tank do you need? and will you need a filter and an air pump or do snails do fine without them?

How often should you feed your snail? Cucumber is good to feed them right? What else can I feed them?

If they bite, does it hurt?

That's all

Thanks

1. A regular tank... anywhere from 1-2.5 gallons each snail (can be more if you want them to grow to their full potential)

2. A filter is better since they make alot of waste...
air pump isnt neccessary as they can breathe about water with their siphon (if its an apple snail).. i like to use airpumps so they only use their gils:)...a heater would be good cuz they need pretty warm temps..but if its smaller then a 5 gallon tank it should be able to adjust to room temp... u could put them in with goldies

3. feed every day all kind of veggies and fruits

4. no their bite is like a vibrating feeling

ok thanks

My mom doesn't want me to have a tank with a filter (I have no idea why) so would it kill him if I don't have one?

are they compatable with betta fish?

oh and when you feed them, do you take them out of the tank or just put them in your hand to eat then back in the water?

it wouldn't kill them it will just get dirty.. you'l need to net out their poo everyday and as for waterchanges... if its a small tank 100% a week

they are compatible with bettas

feeding them u just put the lettuce or whatever in the tank.. you may even want to use a veggie clip:)

hope i helped

Sarah, you can get something that acts like a filter, but doesn't look like one - a simple sponge filter. Its a piece of sponge, that comes in all different sizes, depending on what size tank you have. It runs with an airpump, and does mainly biological filtration, which means, the sponge will hold all the neccessary bacteria that convert ammonia and nitrites. It will collect some of the debris underneath, which makes it partially mechanical as well.
It sits in the tank, and gives off bubbles as well, so you will have the effect of an airstone, although somewhat bigger bubbles.....

ok, thanks smile.gif

If she doesn't want a filter b/c of noise, a sponge filter isn't gonna be that great, most air pumps are at least as loud or louder than a small power filter.

Yep, thats right. Unless we are talking rena airpumps. Now, those guys are QUIET! Mine run for years now, and I still don't hear them. And they come in smaller sizes as well.....smile.gif There is nothing more annoying than a rattling airpump from nnnnnn!....AAAAaaaaahhhhh!...

Yea but she has to know to get a rena, or her mom might become even more dead set against filters!

1. There are different kinds, the Ramshorns or Marisas get maybe the size of a quarter, P. Bridgesiis (aka mystery snails, the most common kind) MAY grow to 2", and Canas can get the size of a baseball.

2. Being vegetarians, they make a lot of waste. I'd recommend a filter but it isn't absolutely needed if you'd rather not. They don't need extra oxygen, having both a lung and a gill.

3. Maria (known as mariastuff on applesnail.net and petlady5 I believe other places) makes good food and treats for them. They like different vegetables, I feed them carrots. Just plop one in until they finish it.

4. biggrin.gif No. Snails only love bite. Hehe.. they don't bite like a mammal would, they rasp their tounge (with teeth on it) against your palm. It feels like a miniature cat licking you. It's quite calming. Obviously I'm a snail nut.
