OK --

So I went back to that store & ... My 6 year old picked out the cutest betta. Of course she names it Bubba (she wanted a girl name but I pointed out that it's a boy fish so... )

He's currently in his new home (the old 2 gal tank with the ugf). He seems really happy in there & has already had some food & is swimming around!

He's a turquoise color with some red on his fins (but they had a really beautiful white betta and a red one and a blue one and... uh oh )

The 9 year old loves yellow & is now ready to start searching for a yellow betta (I think I saw someone had one on another post) (She was mad her sister got "her" tank )

The store had each betta in its own fishbowl (no cups here). The store sells mostly saltwater fish, but the tanks (the live coral is sooo beautiful & the fish are really well cared for. The had beautiful shubunkins and koi too!)

They also have a great selection of plants!!

LOL they are addicting, arent they? Pretty soon you will want one of each color, then one of each fin type… I have seen yellow bettas but they are few and far between, at least around here. If you find a good one, snatch it up!

already I am trying to figure out where to put more of these cute guys!

I think I'm gonna have a problem while I look for my daughters betta (esp if it's gonna take a while & I have to keep checking out the stores...)

Congrats on your new betta "BUBBA" Jenn!!!! I am impressed-you held out pretty long,"but now he's got you my pretty" I had to run out last nite to get froz.food and some meds..Don't you know that I came home with 2 new guys? I just can't seem to control myself....My house is getting so humid when you walk in the door from all the fish tanks everywhere!!! I tried getting 2 different yellow bettas from this guy on line.I got five off of him 2 were yellow...they both died in a matter of days-Must have come from a bad batch...You very very seldom see that kind of yellow if ever in the lfs's...Good luck! With that and Bubba!!!

Thanks! Another obession. I'm trying to hold off until the big tank is cycled to really start (that many water changes has me cringing).

Can you just see me constantly checking for yellow bettas and seeing other pretty fish. Uh oh I think I'm in trouble! You say this will take awhile?? I'm REALLY in trouble

My girlfriends just asked me to go to lunch w/the kids at he new resturant cheesburger cheesburger- guess where it is - right next to this new great store

I have to go now & run errarnds (Hmmm wonder if I can get to the other fish store.......)

So far the betta addiction hasn't hit. I think maybe because I had a hard time in the begining with Chicken.

Hi Laurie-

My poor fish. My daughter (who is now properly chastised) took the fish OUT of the tank to check it out & show her friends (what would possess her I have no idea).

Bubba seems to be OK now - he lost alot of color which is slowly returning. (Poor dude).

Daughter has been told that she needs to step up to the plate or the fish leaves (well at least her room anyway - I don't want him to actually leave the house.)

I think she got the message as she has been really crabby (a sign of guilt for her).

Sigh.....

As for your daughter, how old is she. Even though it hurt the fish, you can't blame her kids are so curious. I'm sure it was a teaching lesson. Hopefully she got the idea. Teaching kids at an early age about animals is crucial.
My mom was always scared I would get hit by a car, so when I was about 4 she showed me a dead racoon on the side of the road. She actually stopped the car and took me to it. "That is what happens when you don't listen to me or run in the road". I never went by the road again. And as for animals, well I spend my life trying to save them. Think there is a connection????

She is 6. It was definately a learning experience (for both of us). Hopefully it will stick with her (My oldest would never have dreamed of doing that. The 2nd though... she's the one you have to keep an eye on. )

The fish is doing much better now. Lots of color. My daughters are fighting over who gets to feed him. (they haven't seen the freeze dried blood worms I got today yet though! ) (The fish loved them!)

The younger one is really very sensitive & is sorry that she caused him distress.

Sigh.. All's well that ends well!

I've got a new betta (pink) not named yet- it's my fish & i'm not going the b-fast route!

Did you just try and sneak a 3rd betta past me?? Did I hear you say I bought one-it's my fish.....

He's really cute. Not entirely sure what color he'll end up but right now he's a pretty shade of light pink! The kids are trying to name him, but as he's mine...

(Shhh - don't tell anyone we got platies in the gf tank - Mickey Mouse ones. They are sooo funny. There's one that thinks he's a gf. She hangs out with them rather than the other platies. So much for them liking a still tank. Guess who's always in the bubbles?? One thing though...After I got home I found out we have males & females ... )

(Now I have an entire school of fish come looking for me when I walk past - it's hilarious! They will all follow me if I walk around the tank:rofl )

Can you hear them, "Food? Food please?? How about now??? Now?? Now???"

I love to tease......Seriously I'm tellin you,it's addictive as heck--Those guys really do have personality if you spend some time with them -you will notice that. How bout those two I bought earlier this week(tuesday nite?) They both looked healthy as heck-I was all thrilled cause the one almost looked as close to dark emerald green as I've seen-Anyway,put them both in tanks-let them sit for a few hours-both were eating/swimming etc...I went to work wed,came home thurs. morning,and green one was dead! I was so upset!!! I can't even get back to the pet store to replace him cause I'm working all week--I bet I've lost 5 or 6 bettas in last two months! Those poor things are risky though I guess-you don't know how old they are how they've been treated-if they've always lived in a cup etc. That made me bummed out!

Jenn that is too funny. You'll have to post a pics of that tank. As for the new betta, what' ca thinking on names.....You can't keep us waiting too long now.

I think you're right Sharon Jenn has lost control. I'm getting such a kick out of someone else besides me losing control.
I wasn't so long ago I went in search of a betta and came home with 12 inches of orandas and a 46 gal tank. Ah insanity it is good to see someone else having it.

Yes Devs, I agree, Sorry if it sounded bad. I didn't mean it to. I think it is funny how addicting this hobby is. I also think it is fun and any animal is pleasure. I'm glad that you are taking pleasure in your fish. I hope that they bring alot of pleasure. It also makes me feel good when I can enjoy mine.

I've already got one gf who's gonna be fish-sitting for me (he he he she USED to own fish before she moved - just wait until her kids are over here taking care of my fish for 5 days. Wonder how long she can hold out??? . She has an empty 10gal at home)

Hey - I have the huge 38 gal tank with only 2 commons in it (well now it also has the platies hee hee). Soooo.... I saw some very cute calico orandas at the lps...(Had to get out & get the new betta tank - under cover so my husband didn't find out )

I think I still want white clouds, we'll see.

(I saw some of those dyed fish at a new fish store the other day. Was soo sad. Totally unnatural colors, covered in ich. I asked about them & they said they get sick quickly due to the dye. It was really sad. :angry: )

Hi gals, you're all having a lovely chat, mind if I butt in? Well I hope not anyway 'cos here I go.

Firstly Sharon, sorry to hear of your loses. Especially after all the anticipation and anxiety that must be involved with shipping fish, the experience may have been too much for them. The recent one from the lfs is a mystery, maybe it was sick or just recovered from illness?

Jen, you certainly sound as if you've been bitten by the bug. I'm the same, I can't go to the lfs to look at fish anymore, it's too tempting. Last week I succumbed and bought 2 baby black moors. (another temporary tank) Well, it's been a month or more since I had any new additions, lets be reasonable. I've gone from keeping 4 fish to 25 fish in three months!

I don't think the temptation and excitement of owning new fish ever goes away but the early days of addiction are quite heady. It's like falling in love, very obsessive, it's hard to get my mind off my fish. I spend hours with them every day.

Annette, oh my 4 to 25 fish. wow, I guess you've needed to upgrade your tank as well. I'm with you right now, can't go in the lfs. I will have to this week sometime, and even though I'm looking forward to it, oh I'm dreading it as well.

I think I may be ok though, I'm still alittle stressed over my new betta and getting him healthy, so he is taking up my fish energy.

PS My family is addicted to Disney World so the platies are just perfect. Now if I can just figure out how to feed all of these fish...

The girls have helpfully told me that I can have the honor of feeding the bloodworms (they fight over the flakes and the betta pellets-the little one actually screams her head off if her big sister feeds her fish. Sigh... ).

I guess we're just going to have to start a "Just say NO"(to fishies) Campaign

Yep I did have to get bigger tanks, I've now got 8 tanks running but 2 of them are temporary and the fish in these are only babies. The eating area of my kitchen is overtaken with fish tanks, on the benches, the table and the buffet! Lucky we have another table in the lounge room.

Jenn I was thinking of names and Elton came to mind for Elton John, I think he needs alot of pampering. Even Verchace (can't spell that one, you know the clothes designer.). I will think of some more.
