Well my snail is still alive but now she doesnt eat and hardly moves anymore. Should I euthanize her? I definitely dont want her to suffer needlessly. Is there any possible chance that she could recover? If euthanizing is the needed how should I do it? Freezing?

I don't know much about this, but the snail is probably not too happy right now. Euthanizing it may be the kindest thing to do right now. I do not know the best way for a snail to go though. Boiling would not be good though.
Sorry about your snail. These things just suck.

Im guessing it would be a good idea to Euthanizing it,but
not until you tryed every thing do you know what could be
causeing this?could your snail be in mad qualiy water?? i read somewhere that snails don't like dirty water and will stay into there
shell or try to get out of the tank could he be stressed out by a fish always trying to eat her?

Black Oranda,
Shes in her own little bowl and with water changes every day.
I still havent euth-ed her. Today she moved to the other side of the bowl and ate some carrot and I want to look at her mantle area and see if its the same. I read on applesnail.net a person had a snail survive a mantle collapse so Id like to give her a little more time.

Well guys, she was worse than ever when I went to change her water so I decided it was time. I put her in a little cup with a drenched paper towel and 1/4inch of tank water and covered it. Then I put her in the freezer. How long does it take for them to go? I feel really bad about killing her......

you did what was best... i would say when the water freezes she should be dead... but to be sure... leave her in there for a while longer and then give her a proper burial...

Is the paper towel the way that was recommended? I would probably completely submerge her in the water so she would just go to sleep. I dont know for sure though because I have never heard of euthanizing a snail. Im so sorry you couldnt save her. I know you did everything possible for her. Feel better soon.

If I had completely submerged her then she would of sufficated before she fell asleep. With such damage to her mantle her lung(s?) would of been crushed from the water pressure.

Well snails could live out of the water with no food for about 4 days
or so.Im sure you did what was best, and you did every thing
you could to save her.

sorry about your lost.

Huh? What KIND of snail can live out of water for that long??? Snails have to be moist to live, otherwise they dry out. Correct me if I'm wrong............

they actually can live out of water.....they just hide in their shell so they dont dry out:)

Wow i am so sorry to hear this!!
I never knew this could even happen.. may i ask how you figured it out? I mean I wouldn't think to check that specifically unless my snail wasn't moving,etc...

I had another snail awhile back that died of the same thing. When she started acting alittle sluggish I researched it alittle more and lifted her out of the water and she drooped out of her shell and thats when I took those pictures (on another thread). Im not positive but I think it is fairly common, especially in breeding males.

That sucks about your snail.
I am sorry that you had to euthanize her. Do you think that the freezer method was the best one? I am just wondering...

Yep it really is the best method..there is no pain for the snail just puts them into a deep sleep..I had to do this too..it was upsetting but the kindest thing if you know the animal is suffering...Linda
