I am competely without knowledge when it comes to snails...so my questions may seem naive, but here is the story. A few weeks ago after my new Aquaclear was up and running for about 4 weeks, I squeezed and rinsed the sponge in my used tank water. When I pulled out the sponge...found small dark dark brown snails inside the filter...small meaning varying from 2mm to probably 6 mm in length.
So, I removed all I saw..and thought the issue was solved. Not so, new ones keep appearing in the filter and also in the bucket I always use for the used tank water. The bucket stays wet....
Okay, so the first question is...where did they come from? The tank in question has been running for years. No new fish, no plants, no new ornaments....only thing new is the filter. I feed Progold.
Second question...should I worry? None have appeared in any tank...unless my fishies are eating them. I certainly don't want an epidemic.....
Thanx!!!

They are probably physa actua and fish will eat them to keep the population in check. When is the last time you added plants? they could have come on then and then crawled into your filter and stayed there. It is possible that they could have come from a while ago.

Thanx for your reply. I will look that snail up...like to know things.
The funny thing is....I've NEVER added a plant. I have gravel and lava rocks and goldies in that tank. The fish are not new....as in really not new....most recent addition is from November 2003. So, eggs in a food? On lettuce?
Glad to know that I won't be overrun. Only find them in my filter....BOF, Smeagle and company must be doing their jobs with snail snacking!!!
