My goldies keep clear of Anacharis... and it floats! You can plant it in gravel and it'll grow roots; just give it a bit of med-low light (i can only recommend natural sunlight, i've no hoods or lights on my tanks).

I do have a Java plant (can't remember the species at the moment) that does quite well on it's own. It attaches nicely to driftwood. No gravel necessary. I'm sure diet has something to do with it as well... ProGold works well for me. My critters don't devour plants like some goldies I've heard of that shred plants.

well,i think is best to do without plant. Not only is is more difficult to maintain and plant produce CO2 that is bad for the fish.

Plants produce oxygen during the daylight & consume C02, and consume oxygen during the night.
However, if you do not overstock your tank and have good aeration, it will never be a problem.
If you have a problem with the fish uprooting your plants, you can try planting them in little terracotta pots filled with gravel.
I have found that when I plant stem plants directly in the gravel, the fish may uproot them for a few days, but once the plants get going and rooted, the fish do not uproot them.

I also found a great plant for goldfish....Whisteria, grows fast enough that the goldfish cant hurt the plants

I've heard you can use plant weights to weigh the plants/decorations down. You can find them at
Doctors Foster & Smith.

I did not have success with Java moss... the fish don't eat it but they keept ripping it off the driftwood and ended up clogging my power filters.
I have Java ferns, anubias nana, and large anubias bariteri... they have been showing decent growth for several months now. They do need the otos to keep'em free of algae.
My fish have destroyed sagitaria platyphila, corkscrew vals, and Amazon swords
