I have florescent lightning in my tank and it seems to accumalate a lot of algea.. I have bought a snail but is there anything else I can do to slow down this problem..it isn't near any sun light.. and I have tried to reduce my lightning times.. but than I can't see my fish... sad.gif

I do not feel that snails really help cut down algea in a tank. I have a few snails, and I do not notice a difference B)

The only thing to do is just scrub the algea off every water change. I do not like 'getting rid' of the algae because I feel that it should be there in the tank and should not be messed with. But, that's just me. smile.gif

yes it does help the tank and gold fish like to eat it some times

so just leave what you can eg just get rid of the algea on the front peace of glass

good luck

Hi,
Actually algae is a sign of healthy tank! It is good for the fish--extra nutrition since they like to nibble it. But it does look bad.

What experts suggest is to scrape it off the front and sides (I use a sponge like scrubber thing I got at Petsmart) and leave it on the back. That way, you can see your fish lol.GIF but still have the benefit of algae which is a good thing!

I have a magnet to remove the algea. I personally think there great and you dont get wet using them. It doesnt get into the corners though, but i havent had any problems with it so far smile.gif

Simple device, yet very effective lol.GIF

You can try adding some fast growing plants like anacharis or hornwort to the tank. They will compete with the algae for nutrients and should slow down it's growth at the very least. Learn to live with a little bit of algae though, it's actually pretty good for the fish (especially golds) and its nearly impossible to keep a tank completely free of algae without hurting either the fish or your cycle.
