I've had Mr. Betta for about three weeks. I overfussed him whe n I got home and he got fin rot, so I treated it. More than one store has told me to do a 25% water change once per week and leave it at that. I've also been told not ot feed him more than three pellets a day, but that just seems cruel so I've been feeding him five, and now four. He eats them right away so I know they're not causing this, although I'm told if he eats less his water won't be so cloudy, or maybe I should just do a great percentage change.

Anyhow, since I used bettafix to treat the finrot, his bowl has developed this disgusting white clearish flakes. They sit on the sides of the bowl, they rest on the bottom like dust bunnies, and when I try to scoop them out they float all over the bowl. They hang in the water and they just seem to multiply. I know this can't be good for my betta nd at the very least it's not fun to look at.

I don't know what to do , I did a water filtering with a plastic mesh coffee filter and 30% change two days ago, and the dust is already growing. Even if I took him out of his bowl, some of th dust water goes in his cup and I think it spreads from that.

Any tips on what this is and how to treat it would be appreciated. Thanks :-)

With a betta in a bowl, I really recommend 100% water changes. If your bowl holds 1 gallon of water, I would do two water changes per week. If it is a 2 gallon bowl, then I would say 1 change per week.

The easiest way to do this, is to have a plastic bucket or watering can and fill it with water and leave it sit for at least 24 hours before the water change. This will let any dissolved CO2 dissipate (the ph will rise after the CO2 dissipates, so it will match the water in the bowl), and the water will get to room temperature. Add dechlorinator if necessary. I use Prime and have been very happy with it. It is good to use a water conditioner such as Prime in betta bowls.

So, I would get your water change water ready, then I would scoop your betta out into a little container, and I would clean out the bowl with hot water (no soap or anything like that). Rinse off all of the ornaments and any gravel with hot water. Add your new water, and put your betta back in. You should be rid of the white chunks, etc.

What type of pellets are you feeding him?
