I just got a mystery snail. I see that some people put food in at night since the goldies eat up everything otherwise. Will my mystery 1-inch snail find enough food in my 72 gallon tank? There is quite a bit of brown algae in places.

Tell me what you do.

if i'm not mistaken, mystery snails WON"T eat the brown stuff, but i could be wrong. you definately need to feed the little bugger, especially as they get older, they need more substantial food than algae. i would suggest to get one of those veggie clips or something else that works in a similar manner to hold a piece of lettuce or cucumber to the side of the tank wall. they crawl up to it and chomp away til it's literally pulp! they will grow fast and healthy if you do this. make sure you're vaccuuming the tank though once a week, as they poop worse than goldfish do LOL ! congrats on your new snail, what's his name??

i have too mystery snails... lol... i feed them once a day all these veggies but when there is no veggies in the tank (usually at night).... they will go around the tank grazing on the brown algae and what not.. lol

Do you put veggies in at night, then (with a clip or something)?

I don't know if I could clip to the bottom without cueing my goldfish. Actually, lettuce doesn't seem a big hit for goldies anyway.

I want my algae cleaned-up! spit.gif . There is a ton in the tube (not as annoying). If I squeeze it ... flakes come out and the goldies gobble it. Its really free food... Maybe if I do that at nighttime when the lights are out.
Jillian
squeeze what?
ed586
The tube from my powerhead that feeds back into the tank. It's a clear rubbery tube. When I squeeze it, the algae breaks free and comes out as flakes... It's kinda convenient. lol.GIF
Jillian
how often do you clean out your filter?!
ed586
I clean the sponge once a week. The other sponges I haven't needed to change yet. The first sponge is catches almost everything and the other two filter the already filtered water.. The hose only has algae in it so I never worried about it. I believe its 99% algae. They don't seem to get sick by it. I can't imagine it being too yucky. Hmmm....

Do you put veggies in at night?
hamstaman
i feed during the day in a feeder box...
Jillian
i put the veggies in whenever lol i dont' know if it's because my black moor is blind, or what, but she doesn't seem to mind the lettuce or cucumber too much, because she can't "Slurp" it up like other fish food. she'll suck on it once or twice, but that's it. she's much too interested in my snail's antennae lol! i put a big piece of lettuce in and it'll be gone by the next day. sometimes i pick my snails up and put them on the lettuce or cucumber - elevator service for my babies smile.gif smile.gif

It is best to take out the snail and feed it in a container
not with other fish that would eat there food.
No,snails don't only eat algea.Infact algea is only a very small precentage of there diet so you have to feed them more stuff like:
fish flakes/pellets veggies and so on.
My snail loves lettuce, good luck with your snail biggrin.gif

I feed my snail every few days w/ cucumber and she eats algae all the other time...

when i first got my snail i had quite a bit of brown algae on my ornaments, and after a night i could see tons and tons of clean bitemarks through the algae, looked rather neat... but she seemed to love it, unless petsmart was just starving her.

I went to the dollar store and got a package of those chip clips. They work great clipping down veggies and sinking them!

And there's a little pice of magnet on it, so when it's time to get it out, it sticks right onto the net! lol.GIF

My snail has been ignoring all the veggies I put in though...I've tried a few... I guess I have to go get some zucchini for him because I think that's what the LFS, where I got him, feeds their snail.

So, so far, he just goes up and down my tank, which has NO algae... (It's a cycled tank that I do either a 25% or 50% depending if I waited a week or two.)

However, he shares algae wafer with the cories... that is... if the piggies on top don't see the algae wafer first! Usually I drop the sinking wafers (Both algae and the ominvorous ones.) behind the plants as to "hide" them from the piggies! smile.gif It works! Usually I feed the starving mass on top, and while their too busy stuffing their face, start sneaking in the sinking food! tongue.gif

Do your snails gobble-up your plants? I'm starting to see holes. rolleyes.gif
Black oranda
Well i never saw my snail eating the plants at all,or did i ever
have any plants that got eaten,if you feed them enough they
shouldn't be in your plants i guess, but i only have java moss, elephant ears, and Philadendrons, and a purple color plant that im not sure
what it is and he never ate them.
Indiglo
ive seen my snail latch onto my plants and chew a small hole in it.

i dont think she likes the taste as i havent seen her on it very often but i did see her once atleast eating it
