Hi I have two apple snail one smaller than the other. They are different in appearance with one having small orange spots around its head while the other has pale skin. The smaller of the two has begun to attach itself to the shell of the large one. The large one initially would try to dislode it but now seem resigned. I live in the Uk and its getting warmer. is the smaller (orange spot) trying to mate?

They could be trying to mate... or maybe maybe he is just doing it for fun.

My apple snails often climb on top of eachother. I think that sometimes they do not know that it is another snail.

it's possible that they were trying to mate. the male gets "on top" of the female in this process. also, it could be that he was just trying to get a bite to eat. the shell of snails collects algae like the walls of your aquarium, which is not harmful to the snail and can be removed with an unused soft toothbrush for vanity sake. often snails will eat the algae of the backs of other snails. but if you say the big one was shaking and twisting? that sounds like mating to me. my snails did just this, but ive yet to see any eggs smile.gif smile.gif apple snail eggs look like orange, pink or salmon colored clumps and they normally lay their eggs above water. apple snails will lay eggs if they feel safe, and feel as if there is food available to them and their babies. do you feed yours romaine lettuce, cucumbers, string beans? you can smile.gif smile.gif have fun with em, whatever the result

No they realy do need at least 4 snail lenths to lay the eggs if the female cant get this she will go walkabouts to find somewhere..sounds to me like your snail was hitching a ride or algea cleaning apple snails mate head to head or head to side if you think where the male part is it is under his shell at front left..so they do not mate like humans do..LOL...Linda
