It should be, but you might want to go up one step to the 330. It's been said that you want 10x filtration for goldfish, so for thirty gallons your target is 300gph.

i agree. try to get the 330 or two 170's. just to stick to the 10X filtration rule of thumb, you know? wink.gif

either way you go about it, i think that youll find that they are indeed very good filters. i just looooove the fact that you have the option of bio-wheels and added filtration media in the baskets. smile.gif

Yes the media baskets are great! There's just not enough room in most hob filters for extra media.

Plus, if you order online, the 330 is just a few bucks more than the 170. There's really no good reason not to get the bigger (and better one), especially with a 30 gallon tank.
