No problem really, except they don't much care for it. If you notice when you go to a pet store which has koi in tanks, the koi drive them selves nuts trying to hide when someone comes around. They hate it. I do have some fry, actually not fry anymore because they were born last year, these guys only know a fish tank. They don't care. That is how they were brought up. From egg until today.
Koi will grow fast so your going to want to have someplace for them when they outgrow your tank. They aren't a clean fish, so water changes are a must.

My Koi were kept in 100 gallon feeding troughs for the winter but are much happier now that they are back in the pond. The first day I moved them to the basement this fall my biggest Koi jumped out. He wasn't a happy camper.

I have about 4 koi in my 420 gallon tank. One has already grown to about 6 to 7 inches. I am getting info on building a nice size pond and hope it does not outgrow my current set up before I can get it built! They eat a lot and grow very fast but are a blast to watch, always on the go!!!!

Im sure koi would be alright in aquariums for awhile,
but after awhile they would need to go into a pond.
Kois seem to grow alot faster then goldfish and arn't the same.
They need diffrent rules, like a female koi needs 700 gallons
and lots of filtration, and males need 500 gallons and lots
of filtration.
Good luck.

well I know a person that has a 29g tank and has about 5 koi
I know its over stock, but the koi have been doing fine for years.
So i guess if they grow up in tanks they dont mind it as much

Those Koi aren't doing well if they've been in a 29 gallon for that long. They should've outgrown that tank by now so if they haven't their growth is seriously stunted. Just because they look fine doesn't mean they are fine. Koi require A LOT of room and are not meant to be kept in tanks.

How big to koi get again (24 inches)? I thought the recommendation was 30 or maybe even 100 gallons for 1 koi. Lol... looks like I'LL never have one...

Maby even 100 gallons

,the best rule is 1000 gallons.
many people fallow the 500 gallon rule with lots of filtration, and for the females is 700 gallons since they can become bigger.
They can become over 2 feet long.
I personaly find that they don't do well in tanks, they should be kept in
ponds.

If the rule is 1000 gallons you'd have to have a huge pond, for sure. I guess I couldn't even have many in a pond. I always thought it was 100 for messiness reasons and 1000 for a lot of room to swim. But it really sounds like you know, black oranda. I can't get one.

I thought it was 100 gallons my self, but after i found out i
was like

oh god! that many gallons.
Thats why im only getting 2 about, for a 2000 gallon pond.

That's interesting, but is it 1000 gallons for the first kio to have room and then the other kio have 1000 already? In other words it seems like the rule is for room. I dunno, but I would think there are successful ponds with 5 koi and it wouldn't necessarily be 5000 gallons. It just seems so huge to me, but I could be wrong. Maybe its 1000 gallons for the first the add 100 for each additional kio?

I have no idea

(this is me hitting myself

just like goldfish, each goldie needs 10 to 15 gallon minimum,
each koi needs at least! 500 gallons minimum, but the main rule
is 1000 gallons,It seems alot for one fish but they need
the room.

Okay, that means 10 koi need 10,000 gallons. Seems a little high, but I've never kept them before. Thanks.

not sure where you are getting your info from? I have 15 koi ranging from 18 inches down to 6 inches. Of course as everyone know's I've had a horrible spring, but until this spring I never really had a problem. I have a 4,000 gallon pond. My largest fish was 3 inches when I bought her, as most of my fish were. I don't get them large so they continue to grow and do fine. 4,000 gallons is a lot of water.
Before I expanded to 4,000 gallons I had about 1,500 gallons with 15 koi and about 15 pond comets. I had that set up for 3 years and didn't have any problems with them. They all seemed happy. Of course I think that my koi are much happier now with the extra space. I gave my comets to a lady that I knew would take care of them. I hated to let them go though

but I felt the koi really needed more space.

I can understand 100g for each koi, but 1000 is a little much for a rule of thumb

Yah, 1000 is a little much... I think 500 is a little much lol... i guess 100 does seem right, I mean how would the koi even know percisly how much water is in the pond? I dont even think they would care if they only had 1000 for about 10....
