I was just wondering, does any other people have bamboo in their tanks?
It makes it look very nice, (wish i had digital camera) and it is a live plant.
The fish also likes to hide inside the roots.

I've not tried it myself but I've heard it looks very good in a tank.
Is bamboo actually an aquatic plant though? I not sure that it is... is yours growing and putting out new leaves?

Maybe you're thinking of old bamboo wood? I know bamboo pieces have to be very carefully sealed before using them as ornaments because they quickly rot and go nasty. Don't know about live plants though... I'd be interested to see what you find on those.

Yeh bamboo is toxic.
But also it may absorb lots of water from your tank as it is VERY fast growing

bamboo is not traditionally considered an aquatic plant but i have seen numerous bamboo plants 2/3 submerged and looking great.

No, bamboo is not toxic in water, it also eliminates algae, never seen algae in my tank. Ever since i put it in. And 2/3 submerged is good. But luck bamboo, the ones i have, they sprout stems from the bottom, they are fully submerged, growing up. It does not rot. And looks great.

O yeah, forgot about this, the ones in the jars, it is nothing but water. The ones you see in the stores, it is nothing but water and a few rocks. But they can also be grown in soil. Anyway, if you put it in, it will lower or completely eliminate algae. I heard it has some kind of ability to clear water of toxins and stuff.
but look at my gallery for pictures with my bamboo.

i have a hood on my tank- is it still possible to do?
Fantail
Nov 14 2004, 06:14 PM
Yes, most hoods have a piece where you can peel of, or you could cut a slot.
I'll put some pictures soon

there is a slot for you to put filters and stuff, so use that, bamboo is very narrow
and be sure to give it some sunlight or it may die.

I got a few pieces of bamboo from a chinese store, and the lady told me that bamboo roots and the lower part of the plant are supposed to be submerged in water, and doesn't need any soil or anthing. The reason some people use it with rock as well is to hold it in place a lot better than just water alone....

Which reminds me, the chinese store is open tomorrow!

Thats great, you could put it in the tank, Ranchugirl, do you have algae in your tank right now? If so, see if the bamboo reduces it. I have not cleaned my tank once ever since i set it up in August.

After seeing how wonderful the bamboo looks in your tank Fantail, I am going to be using that idea for my next tank set up. Why do some people consider bamboo toxic to fish? i trust your judgment fantail as your fish look bright & healthy but some posts i've read are unsure....why is that?

No, it is not toxic in the water. It is not the same as real bamboo, which i don't think is toxic. Lucky bamboo is the stuff you get at stores. Look at difference.

real bamboo:

I have WATER BAMBOO it is not toxic to fish, on the other hand real bamboo is toxic and will rot quickly and foul up the water by leaving a poisonous toxin
I got some at petco for 4.95 (U.S. dollars) just for two stalks

What is water bamboo? But lucky bamboo will not rot in water. Some shoots grew from inside the water. It did not rot and will soon grow out of the water. I think that real bamboo can't be in water. But lucky bamboo, the ones you get at chinese stores and gift shops are supposed to be grown in water.

very cool
I was wondering.. could i buy one stalk.. put it i the slot of where my filter goes.. 2/3 submerge it and put the "roots" underneath the gravel (i will be leaning the bamboo on the side of the slot so it own't move)
I want it cuz it gives tank a nice look from the top... cleans up algae and clears water in that case and its just nice all around.. would that work???
