Yes you can, but you have to treat it first.
Soak the bucket in hot water in a bucket for about a week. Change the water as often as it needs. This gets rid of the tannins wood naturally releases (the stuff that makes the water go yellow). Scrub the wood down a couple of times as well.
After that it should be ready to go.
The water in your tank may still get discoloured, however the carbon in your filter should take it out.
Hope that helps!

The release of the tannins may be speeded up by boiling the wood. This will also ensure there are no nasties lurking. I have some mopani wood which I have slow boiled for 6 hours - twice - and it is still leaching tannins and staining the tank water, only much more slowly now.
I'd use carbon in my filter if only it wasn't so ###### expensive (I understand that you have to replace it regularly otherwise the carbon will release it back after time.)

Yes you do have to replace it every month or so.
I have found that a cheaper way to use carbon is to buy the carbon in bulk, and make your own baggies for it with pantyhose. Of course this totally depends on what sort of filter you have, but for my AquaClear it is working well.
