I know there are freak golfish (sorry people, in my opinion, bubbleheads are a genetic deformity that looks cool but renders the fish completely helpless and deformed), are there freaky bettas?
Like, for example, bettas come in a variety of fin lengths and colors, but are there any deformities that are bred into a particular strain of betta? and if so, where can I see the explicit photographs lol.

Well, all I can say is that they say "There's a reason for everything!!!" I personally have not seen any kind of "Freaky Betta."

To see the differnt betta varieties, type "betta types" into a browser- you can see the different kinds, perhaps one of those will catch your eye

No really freakish bettas. Sure, there are different tail types, but they all have the same body form. Probably the 'weirdest' thing so far as bettas go are double tails and double cross crowntails. Neither of which interfere with the bettas ability to move.

What do you mean by a bubble head? Do you mean Oranda, Lionheads and Ranchus, Telescopes or Bubble eyes? I don't have bubble eyes, but I have the other 4, and my fish are by no means helpless or deformed. And just so you know, every kind of goldfish is a genetic deformity.
I think some of the combtails bettas are kind of freaky. Freaky in a good way, they look like the were hit by a lawn mower to me

I can't wait to find one!
Nykole, what are these Giant Betta's? How big do they get. They sound really neat.

I must be true - I think telescopes and bubbleeyes (yea eyes, not heads, sorry my mistake) and hunchbacks are deformed. Bubble eyes are pretty helpless, they can't swim or really see where they're going, and anything not smooth will hurt them.
I'm curious though - what do you mean that every goldfish is a genetic deformity? I've heard that all goldfish were bred from a single wild species, though I'm not sure which one - do you mean that all pet store goldfish whether 'fancy' or 'not fancy' are all deformed because they're replicas of the past goldfish? Good point, I guess they are! Still though, although bubble eyes look REALLY cool, I do think theyr'e freakishly deformed and helpless. So there. I don't care if you are a goldfish connoisseur and have b een caring for them for years, and know about their history, I have a BETTA, ######, and that's my opinion! lol.

Jessica,
I dont know much about the giant bettas except they are supposed to be 3 or 4 times the size of a normal betta. I think their fins are shorter also. I first seen them on Betta Talk and they are called the "Goliath strain."

I owned a half giant female for a while and she completely dwarfed all of my other bettas. She was soo awesome! Some of the giants have shorter fins, but I've seen a super delta one too.
I don't think bubble Eyes are completely helpless. Not if they are properly cared for. They just have special needs, like any fish. Put a clown fish in a freshwater tank and it's completely helpless...and will die. They need saltwater. Bubble Eyes need peaceful tankmates similar to it and no sharp edges in its tank. If its set up is proper for it it will thrive. Set the tank up right and the bubble eye won't be helpless at all.

Wow, I'll have to keep my eyes open for the Goliath strain!! They sound amazing!
I meant that all goldfish were genetically altered, mutations, freaks, whatever you want to call them, because they are "man made". Man bred them from wild carp. Every kind of goldfish that there is today

And what a good job they did.
I don't have any bubble eyed goldfish, or celestials. But I have most of the other kinds. And I wasn't being smart when I asked you what you meant by bubble head, I was serious. I have a high top oranda, and it looks like he has a bubble head...LOL!

i just saw this thread and all i have to say is:
jess, you kill me!........ "they look like the were hit by a lawn mower to me, I can't wait to find one!"........ that is just too much!
i happen to think that they look pretty cool too. they are kind of punk rock in a way. they just look like theyre a fin-rotted out and raggety looking, when in reality theyre healthy and happy just like the perfect looking ones!

The Giant bettas grow about 5 inches long, usually they are short finned and look like a plakat. They also come in 'half giant' size of about 3.5 inches, but that to me borders on large 'regular' bettas...
The gene that causes the double tail also shortens the body, so sometimes you see these disgusting 'balloon' bettas with horrifyingly short and fat bodies, because they haven't been crossed to a ST line in a few generations. That's pretty much it for bettas..

I'd like to think of it as goldfish have their cuteness factor genetically-improved.

Just like doggies. They were bred for different reasons other then hunting as a pack, but getting along with humans. Maybe that's why goldies are so friendly!.
