I'm thinking of starting a small tropical tank. I'm looking at neon tetras, frogs, guppies, and those cool lobster guys.

I know the one inch per gallon is used for tropicals, and they cycle and everything is the same, but what else is there? Can all these be in the same tank together? I think I ready somewhere that tropicals like a ton of foilage....do they eat live plants as much as goldfish do?

Any additional info would be great to.

OH, also, I know goldies tend to be expensive (filters, tanks, etc) are tropicals as expensive?

And how much filtration should they have?

well i can try help you out on some.. All the fish you mentioned can go together, except for maybe the crab thing, i had one in my tank and it would just gobble my fish when they were slow or sleeping on the bottom.

But i'm sure other people will give you more info soon enough.

Hi Aftran,
As Svendenhowser said you probably would do best by not putting a crawfish in the tank as they will definatley eat fish. As for the frogs I don't know. Never kept em before.

Neither neons or guppies will bother your plants if you decide to have them but it is not nessesary to have have live plants in the tank and the fish will do just fine.

Guppies swim around at the waters surface and the neons will swim around in the middle of the tank. That leaves a nice space at the bottom of the tank for a bottom fish if it's within stocking limitations.

Filtration requirements depend on tank size, stocking densities, water changes, etc.
Just like goldies it is all a matter of providing pH and temperature stability, zero ammonia and nitrites, and as low on nitrates as you can get, along with a good diet. Simple huh? smile.gif

Congratulations on your soon to be tropical tank and best of luck.

Bugger about the crawfish............i think that was they key to getting my dad to go along with it...........

Anyway, what are some good bottom dwelling tropicals?

Corys (coryadoras) are neat little bottom fish.
