After killing 2 cardinal tetras with my inexperience, I bought a pair of femail silver mollies for my new tropical tank yesterday. One has just given birth to 20 babies (all doing quite nicely)...
Thank God I bought a breeding trap when I got the mollies! Now I'm happier than ever, but I must keep up the water changes now more than ever, as I have a mini-cycle going on in the tank already!

Hey that's really cool! Silver mollies are such pretty fish... I have stared covetously at them in my LFS quite a few times!
Wow, lots of water changes for you to do then if the tank is already mini-cycling. Hopefully it will settle down fairly quickly though and then you can really enjoy the babies.

Now here's a question, do I have to sucessfully breed goldfish to get the breeder award medal in my signature, or now we have a tropical forum, can my Mollies count? I must ask (or grovel) to Koko!

Hey there mate, congrats on the babies !!!
i noticed that when my mollies bred, i had a significantly higher survival rate when the tank was slightly salted, as they are actually brackish fish,
good luck m8

I'm using 1tsp per 5g Aquarium salt! 19 babies are alive, and growing fast! 3 days old now!

Lucky! My mollies never have babies! the only babies I ever get are guppies. And speaking of guppy babies, all of mine that have gotten big enough to tell what sex they are, are females! Are the males not as hardy as infants or something? (haha, fish infants--how cute!)

My mistake - had a good count last night, when they all went up to feed - 21 were born, and I now have 20 fry. They have at least doubled in size since they were born.

hey, whoever had all the female guppyd, i think they are all born female, and mature just as they hit colour, thats when you will find some males

How do you tell the difference between a male and female silver molly then?
Kev

the male doesnt have an anal fin, more of a sexual *instrument* and the female has a regular anal fin

I'm actually down to just 10 of the 21 babies now, but they are beginning to colour up nicely... Looks like dad may have been a black molly. Do they interbreed like that does anyone know, or will silver only mate with silver?
It just looks like I've got at least 8 black ones among the babies!
They are just starting to pick at small bits of normal flake food rather than the fry powder!
