Hi now, that summer is getting here. We are being invaded by lots of birds. Actually I like them being around the house and in my yard. But sometime they are drinking water from my pond fountain/waterfall and taking bath in the waterfall. I am a bit worried if they would give some disease to my fishes. Comments?

I can't imagine watching something more enjoyable! Ilove birds and fish! Thats been going on like that for a long long time-I guess it's possible, but Basically,I wouldn't think that would be any problem-That's just nature, don't you love it?(Now kingfishers eating them would be a whole new subject!)lol

I've heard that they can give diseases. My pond attracts lots of birds bathing and drinking and I've never had any trouble yet.

Yea... I love birds and fish ! So the situation is actually pretty nice other than the worry of the disease.

One thing to watch is if the birds are going to the bathroom a lot in the pond that might screw up the water, but since so different, biologiclly speaking, diseases are probably not interchangable. One thing that might happen though is if the bird has just come from a nearby natural pond it may introduce a parasite into your pond, like leaches or flukes.

well, birds eat either fruits or bugs.. these may contain chemical that is not desirable to fish.. lets put it this way.. my black car was stained by some bird and noone bother to clean the stain during the few days I was away.. when I came back after 4 days, the bird poop dried up on my car and it left a permenent stain on my car!! yes, the poop contain acid/chemical that reacts with the paint and that particular spot change color.. nothing can be done to revive it despite hardcore polishing and scrubbing.. the effect eats directly into the paint and that particular spot is a goner.. erm, not just that spot, several spot.. this is to show how toxic bird poop can be...
so u may want to take action if they birds are visiting ur pond..

Birds have bathed in my water falls since I started my pond and my fish have always been fine. The only problem for me is that that drop in bird seeds from time to time that I have to vacuum out and there is one plants that they usually destroy.
I have chipmunks that also have a "secret" bath to the base of my waterfall and they drink out of it all the time. They are so cute to watch.

Birds!! YUCK!!
Last summer, we were wondering why the kois were sticking to the bottom of the tank, even when it was feeding time!!
Then the next day our neighbors knocked and said they saw some HUGE birds circling our backyard and flying off with our fishies!!!
Boy was my daddy mad!! He wanted to kill the birds as he's had his koi pond for years! Poor man had to run out and get a net to put over his pond for the rest of the summer!! lol
The nets off again as he loves to enjoy his pond! (He's retired!)
But be weary of anything that might just have a lovely feast on your careful tended fishies!
