Full Version: Onion Plant Turning Yellow And Mushy :(

Recently got plants couple weeks or so ago, anacharis(which still hasnt rooted:)) , onion and java fern maybe.

Anyway bout a week after I got them (with 2 new fish too), my tank came down with ich.

So I put the plants in a small 2.5 gallon on front porch, dechlorinated water, with some easy balance. They get nice morning sun, but onion is yellowing badly and getting mushy and java fern getting dark/dryed/crunchy spots in it. Think no fertilizer is a problem? Not sure what else to do.

I have a new 55 tank cycling and I thought it would be worse for them to put them in there

I dont have a co2 thingy, not even sure what those do lol, but will they be ok (if they live) without that, the tank is in front of a big picture window.

Hi Susu,

Could be lack of nutrients, possibly lack of CO2 or possibly even the water is getting too warm for them in the sun. I would personally put them in the cycling tank; ammonia and nitrite don't affect plants like they do fish... in fact the plants will use some as fertiliser. I'd also give them a feed with some liquid fertiliser however when they first go in. smile.gif

Onion plants should have about 2/3 of their bulb above the gravel, if yours is planted too deep that could cause it to rot. Plants also don't like getting too hot/cold, so make sure your temperature isn't getting too extreme for them.

Thanks!! It is prolly both of them, today water was real warm, its hot down here (Louisiana), and they are planted deep hehe.

Onion plants are great plants they don't need much, but as stated before don't cover their bulbs, they need just the roots covered. I have three of them in my tank and growing like a weed. Sometimes when the leafs get to long I cut them off on the top of them since they will block my out take of my filter hehehmn.gif
