Hey,
I'm trying to raise some brine shrimp, to feed to my fish. My fish are too big and won't eat the ones that just hatch. Two main questions, how do I know where the shrimp are and where the bad parts are? I hatched them before, but they seemed to be all over the place, and the top seemed to have a bunch of unmoving ones. How do I get mostly only thelive brine shrimp?

I got some liquid fry food for them, how much do I need to feed? I usually hatch 1/2 a teaspoon of the eggs at once.

Any info, or links to good websites would be appreciated!

Mkinga, the empty eggs is the stuff that floats on top of the hatchery. To concentrate the brine shrimp in one spot, have a flash light or any kind of small light ready and position it on the bottom of the hatchery. The shrimp will swim towards the light, and you can easily collect them with a turkey baster or eye dropper kind of tool.

As for raising them to adult hood, I hardly find it worth the effort. They are so cheap in the pet stores, and you have to feed those guys, and have their brine solution always prepared. If you keep the freshly hatched eggs in a cooler temperature, their metabolism will slow down, and they can stay alive up to 48 hours. They do eat whatever small organic matters they can get, so the liquifry should be okay, if you wonna give it a shot. As for a website, Petfish.net is has a neat section on life food, as well as a forum. Go check it out! smile.gif

Thanks for the info! Is it okay to just use a brine shrimp net and skim off all the top stuff, then use the net to swirl around and get as many as possible?

I just figured live food is the best? This isn't really for my goldfish, its for my african cichlids. The freeze dried stuff is pretty cheap, but I dunno, I figured that I would do this once in a while for a treat for the cichlids.

Yeah, I guess the cichlids like to chase down their food, so freeze dried doesn't work so well for them. Some cichlid keepers even say that their fish don't even go for the frozen stuff, they only eat live food.
The net trick should work as well, at least it goes much faster that way...smile.gif

they are not like greedy greedy goldfish, willing to even to try to bite off my finger rofl3.gif

I think my goldfish noticed I spend less time with them, got splashed today when feeding them! They can splash pretty hard, I was a good 1-1.5 feet away from my goldfish.

cichlids are picky eaters, they really don't like pellets (at least mine don't)

Thanks for the info
