Here's my tank...I only have a few plants in it right now. I've never had live ones before so I wanted to try it out with a few before filling up a tank with them.

Oh gosh.... you're in a bit of trouble in the plant department. I've no idea where you got your aquarium plants from, but whoever who sold them to you ought to be SHOT! Of the 3 plants you have, 2 are terrestrial plants and NOT aquatic. Those are "temporary" plants (which IMO do NOT belong in an aquarium). The Palms on the right will not grow under water, the red plant on the left is also definately another terrestrial plant (although I can't quite put my finger down on what it is atm)... The plant in the middle is an Echinodorus sp of some sort (Sword plant), and they are excellent aquatic plants. The Swords will need root fertilisers and lots of it to grow well. You can either get root tablets (or latterite enriched balls) from your LFS to fertilise your sword plant or try "fern sticks" (Easier option for a newbie is to get it from you LFS).

It's dissapointing when you start off with the wrong plants in the first place, especially when this is your first go at a planted tank, and when they die, you have a misconception that they are "hard to grow" when infact they were not even aquatic plants in the first place. Putting them underwater is almost like drowning the plant!

Get some true aquatic plants and u will have much better success. Start with something easy such as Hygrophillia polysperma, or wisteria....

Good luck....

Thanks for the advice on the plants! I had no idea that the reddish plants wasn't an aquarium one...(i did question the palms though...they just look like decorations.) I will look into the plants you suggested for beginners and I'm sure that will make me feel better about my plant-growing skills. Thanks again!

biggrin.gif Very nice tank,BlueMeanie, but unfortunately Kev is right. A couple of those plants will look ok for a short while, then rot away in your tank, and It looks like you have worked too hard to let that happen.Starting out with plants sometimes can get expensive,so you want to try and get things you won't have to replace. I learned the hard and costly way! rolleyes.gif The swordplant was a very good pick, you can get another of those.Try some Java ferns, anubias, any of the crypts family, onion plants, vallisneria, sagittaria, etc.,to name a few. These are all reasonably priced and rather easy to take care of Good luck- your fish look healthy, your tank looks like drinking water(better) and you are on your way to having a nice display! biggrin.gif

I know you're getting pushed on the stocking limit, but once you get some more plants you should get two buddies for your cory. They really are a shoaling fish, like your neons, and should be in a group. I reccomend 4 as a minimum, most reccomend 6, but since you're almost at your limit 3 would do okay! They are very cute when they all play together!

You've done a great job with that tank. I would suggest anubias! They are the greatest little plants, so pretty! I love that rainbow rock, and the contrasting colours with your fish. Nice picks. B)

Cory fish should always be in a pair of 2 or in a small group
they can get really stressed out alone.
Really? only a 10 gallon! wow ohmy.gif

Thanks for the advice! I just rushed over to the pet store before they closed and got a couple more corys. I think they'll be happier now smile.gif As for the plants, I'll have to get them online (I'm not going to trust Pet Quarters anymore for plant tips and the other ones around don't have anything that looks too healthy)...I found one called www.aquariumplants.com with tons of plants and fertilizers etc. and I think I'm going to try that one out sometime soon.

Cool! Glad to see you got your cory some buddies. Any more than 2 is a good starting point. When you just have a pair, and one dies, the other dies soon after sad.gif

Yeah check out anubias nana.
Kev
you got some very nice fish there smile.gif
BlueMeanie
thank you smile.gif
