Full Version: Stocking Suggestions For A Small Pond
Forum > The other fish > Koi / Pond

Ok. So I couldn't resist. This weekend I went to Home Depot and bought a small. 60 or 70 gallon outdoor preformed pond. It is built, and running with a good size filter. I need some help with determining if I can, at all, stock it with fish. Koi will out grow it quickly. Could I add koi, or comets, ?

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

That is way too small for Koi. Comets or Shubunkins would be okay. Oranda's would do well. I don't know what part of the country you are in but if it gets cold in the winter you'd have to bring the Oranda's inside.

I like starting with feeders and watching them grow. Also, if something goes wrong - neighborhood cat or something unexpected you are not out a lot of money. Start with a few feeders, then move up if everything goes well.

I went out this morning and my pump was locked up. It was very hot sad.gif , I pulled it out and let it cool off. I cleaned the stuff out that blocked it and it is working. smile.gif

I'd also suggest that if you do put the fish in and you are in a colder climat that freezes you'd better take all fish in. That small of a pond will freeze up completely, unless you put a heater in it. My upper pond is about 100 gallons, last year it froze solid. This year I ran my water fall so it didn't freeze up, but I had a heater which heated the water before it went into the skimmer to the water fall.
