Cloudy Water
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hey hey,
i just want to know why my water has been cloudy for a long time now. i have read from your other message boards that it is just bacterial growth. but i cant seem to understand why i can't clear up the water. i checked the pH and nitrate and nitrite levels. it appears that the only problem that i had was with the nitrite. but how can that be. how can i fix the cloudy water? i am always doing daily water changes and it seems to do nothing. is this cloudy water hurting my fish at all? they seem to be ok, but i am not sure. please help me to fix my goldfish woes.

How long has it been cloudy? If you're doing water changes everyday and have high nitrite readings, it sounds like you're still cycling the tank. Need more info from you.
01. How long has your tank been running?
02. How many gallons and what shape is the tank?
03. How many and what types/sizes of inhabitants are there?
04. What type and size filter are you using?
05. Are you using additonal media in your filter?
06. Do you condition your water when changing it?
07. How often and how much water do you change out?
08. What substrate do you have in your tank?
Examples:
a. gravel
b. river rock
c. driftwood
d. sand
09. Do you have any real plants in your tank?
10. How long have you been keeping Goldies?
11. What are your test results?

If your nitrites are high then your probably in the last phase of the cycle. It takes longer for enough bacteria to build up to break down nitrites than it does to break down ammonia. I think alot of your cloudy water problems may be the result of being highly overstocked and the amount of food it takes to feed that many fish in such a small living space. You have to change your water everyday because of the amount of fish you have and that can stir things up too. I know my tank stays cloudy for a couple of hours after a water change.

my feeders that i have are commons. the koi that i have is about 1foot long. i think it is for ponds but i keep it for fun. another question that i have to ask has to do with water bubbles. for some reason, i am getting all these bubbles on the top of my aquarium. is this a problem? it is just bubbles right? or does it have to do do with the fact that my cycle is off or if my nitrites or ammonia high or whatevers? please help me. in one year, these problems only happen now.

A 1ft koi in a 28 gl tank??!! That koi alone needs 100 gl / fish to be a happy camper, and with all the other fish in it, you are way overstocked.
And those bubbles appear when there are too many organic matters in the tank, such as waste, food, and so on. Another sign of overstocking. With a fish load like that, I am surprised, you didnt have problems earlier.
Can you get a bigger tank somehow, or give the koi to somebody with a pond? They are really pond fish, and do a lot better there, especially in that size...
I hope that helps a bit.

Interpet do a product called Filter Aid, designed tohelp clear up cloudy water, or try some fine water-polishing pads in your filter to trap tiny particles.
