Hi guys.

My poor Red and White Ryukin has his mouth all swollen up and inside it looks like teeth. Since his mouth is white I don't know if I caught it early enough because he's been on the bottom on and off for a week. I treated it as if it was constipation and it seemed to help. Anyways, he's more swollen then yesterday although a little "growth" on the outside of his mouth seems to be gone. Its the lip and inside that half blocked. This is horrible!

Anyhow, I have him separate in a 10 gallon with a whisper, no carbon. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Does Malichite green work in anybodys experience here? If it doesn't help in 24 hours, I think I'll filter it out and try the Melafix I just bought. I wanted to give it a chance to work. Since I used it before, could the fungus become more resistant that quickly?

Thanks for any help or suggestions. It may not be cotton mouth, maybe cists? What do you think?

Thanks!

I've never used Malachite Green but you should continue with the treatment and then try a second dose if the condition appears to be getting better. If you switch meds without trying them out for a whole treatment than the bacteria will become more resistant. So, I would suggest trying the treatment and after the full course of the first treatment if nothing has changed then switch but if it appears that the treatment has had some effect do the second dose.

sounds like Columnaris to me, Ed. Potassium Permanganate is a great choice of treatment, but if you can not get that, try Fungus eliminator from Jungle.
Be aware, with most medications, its neccessary to take the filter media out when treating, since it will take a toll on the beneficial bacteria otherwise....smile.gif

I found from a Google search that Jungle Clear Water has 0.53% Potassium Permanganate. Does anybody know about this. It seems pretty weak but how do I get the right solution with "0.53%" without just getting on line and ordering?

Thanks.
