Hi guys,

So I choose a daunting task for my new passtime. Bringing back the Philadelphia Veiltail to the U.S.

There is only one breeder that I know of (Al) and I don't know if there are any else in the world but probably not in the U.S. There are many veiltails in Europe, as I've heard, but virtually none in the U.S.

So my question is, what organinzations do you guys belong to that help you in your breeding needs? Are any of you members? I guess I'd like to network with them or any of you so that when I start having babies, I'll be ready.

Actually, they are very difficult to breed and Al has many challenges over the years. Since you don't see them in stores, you know that they are not as available as we'd like them to be. So I'm going to give it a shot even though my chances of success are slim, at least I will get a few good fish out of it. It is very difficult for a small time breeder like myself to make any money, so I'm dedicating myself to the pleasure of helping restore the breed.

I think a good organization or ideas as to who may want these babies and how to propogate the breed to other breeders would be useful. When I get babies, I want to send them to good people.

Any comments or ideas are appreciated! Thanks for reading my long post!

Wow, that sounds like a neat idea. I have never seen a veiltail, other than pictures, but had no idea they weren't out there. I would love to have one if you succeed. Maybe Koko's members will bring them to the US!

That would be a good idea. I got 3 one-year-olds, so it will be time before I start, but maybe later in the summer. It would be really cool to be a part of, and something like Koko's might help exchange ideas and help with a project. I'm only at the beginning stages and will stick close to Koko's for help as I've always got excellent help here.

Anybody belong to the "Goldfish Society" of http://www.goldfishsociety.org/? I'm wondering if it would be a good way to figure out the standards and to responsibly carry out the project? Please don't think I'm turning away from Koko's! unsure.gif I'm trying to gather all the understanding I need before the fish arrive. And I'm having the "Goldfish Breeding" book sent to me.

This is interesting. This article says the Veiltail started from the Philadelphia Veiltail so it is only recently been breed and then spread to other Veiltails from the original strain: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfi...il/veiltail.htm. But the Philadelphia may be dieing out unless someone else has information out there. Anybody?

This is going to be cool. smile.gif But difficult. unsure.gif

Ed, the Goldfish society is the perfect spot for breeding. I belong to it as well. The GFSA has something called a Breeders cycle, where breeders share their experiences with problems, new developments and so for. In the breeders cycle you can get eggs/fry from the other breeders to raise, in case the breeder has a disaster in his tank, there are other fry from the same spawn available to continue the line.
The GFSA brings out a bi-monthly report, which you can either receive via mail or email. In it are articles about various fish related issues, as well as ad5 from breeders selling their fish.
I got to know Terry Cusick, the chairman of the GFSA, for a few years now, and I am really happy with them. Once a year there is a social going on in one of the breeder's house, on invitation only, where breeders come together, exchange experiences, bring fish for a little mini show, showing off some new trades in their fish, and generally to have some fun. Al belongs to the GFSA as well.....smile.gif

Oh! Oh! *raises hand* put me on your waiting list for a veil tail baby, biggrin.gif

They are next to impossible to find, and when you find them, they cost a small fortune. By the time you have a baby for me to purchase, I will have saved enough money spit.gif

I do enjoy breeding and have a lot of time on my hands. I would love to get into veil tails. Alas I will have to wait until I can buy a male and female suitably matched, which will take me, like oh 10 years!

I am excited for you!! We need more veiltails in North America. They are so beautiful.

Thanks Ranchugirl and Jessica. Wish me luck. I'll post when I have babies (cross-fingers). That is so cool to hear about the GFSA. I suspected that Al was a member when I saw a fish of his on the website. It makes me realize that when he said "there is noone in the U.S." that is breeding the Philadelphia, he really knew what he was saying. And it is posted as one of the projects of the GFSA. Wow, it sounds like noone is helping. Well, I'm going to give it a shot! Thanks again for the notes. smile.gif
