well i believe the usual rule of thumb is 1gf= 10 gal... and i dont think it'd be very um... beneficial for your fish not to be feed for a week... can you have someone feed them for you? like a neighbor? i'm not sure about the filters.. i'm still having difficulties with my own.. well good luck with your fishies

those vacation feeders you buy at the petstores work ok...but i bought a 2 week one before i went on a 3 day trip, and by the time i got back, it was over half gone. either my goldfish was a total piggy, or they just dissolve faster than they say they will, i don't really know for sure, since i couldn't be there to watch. one of them may make it through a week though, and even if it doesn't quite make it to the end, a day or two without food shouldn't kill your fishies. (might even be good for them.)

well gee whiz i had a whole thing typed up and then my computer froze up. so ill begin again.

wav.gif welcome to the board! you've come to the right place! as you now know, the rule is 1 goldfish per 10 gallons. becuase your goldies are small and its almost a 20 gal, they should be ok for the time being with a few extra water changes, until you can afford atleast a 20 gal (should be asap)

your filter is ok with the 15 gal, but its limits are 20 gal, so you could probably have a better one.

i definately would not go with one of those vacation food things that are blocks and sit in your water--the fish will eat as much of it as they can on the first day, so they would be down to nothing on the 3-4 day. i would look in to an automatic feeder if i were you, the have these little slots for each day you cant feed them, and you put however much food into them as you would feed them in a day. then it just drops that days food in when the time comes. i think they are around $25. of course, if you trust someone you know to feed them (and not too much) daily, you could hire a friend!

just a quick question- do you have a water testing kit? if not, you should look into buying one, they are very helpful when it comes to figuring out (if you have a sick fish) why they are sick. you should get one that tests ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and ph.

wav.gif just thought i'd chuck in my 2 cents about not feeding your fish for a week. i went on holiday for a week this year, and i was panicking that my babies would starve...i gave them a good feed just before we left, then nothing. i came back a week later to find a tank full of healthy happy fish, who were even happier to see me(!). i think they'd be fine for a week with no food, but if you'd rather feed them , then it's probably safest to bribe a friend to pop in and do it for you spit.gif

welcome to the board!

yeah, i would go with the friend deal if you can. just make sure to bring them back something cool! hehe and if you are afraid they will overfeed, have them come in every OTHER day and feed your normal amount. this way if its a little more, the tank will be more adjusted.

If you bribe a freind (cookies on the counter works well!) have them only come once or twice. And make sure you pre-measure your food. I use a pill dispenser - the kind that has one little compartment for each day - and put in the food for the day in the compartment. Then I hide the rest of the food. It is MUCH better to have very little food or no food, than too much food, particularly if the water is not going to be changed.

Welcome, welcome! Glad you are here. Come back after your week off!
