Hi - ive about 2 and half inches of water in my 5 gal tank and all babies are hatched except a few eggs which I will remove as I think they arent fertilised.

I have been advised to add a bit more water from my other tank that has 5 goldies in at the mo but the nitrites are at 1.8 and according to the test kit this is a dangerous level? the ammonia is basically 0 though. Is it safe to add water from my big tank to the frys tank or should I add new tap water with dechlorinator??

My big tank is only starting its second week of cycling but the adult goldies seem happy (munchin on lettuce as i type)

Also I havent a filter in the fry tank except an airstone bubbling very gently - what do you all think? Ive added a small couple of drops og liqifry as quite a few are starting to swim! biggrin.gif

I would add a few more inches of water to the tank. YOu can do it VERY slowly by using airline tubing to get it in there. Just have abucket of dechlorinated and temperature matched water sitting someplace above the tank, and let it slowly run through the tubing to the fry tank. Test the pH before you add it to make sure it within the same area than the tank water, anything higher/lower than 0.2 from the tank water isn't good. smile.gif

can i add a fluval one with a stocking over it to prevent fry being sucked in? i tried to get a sponge filter but my fish store were out of them

all it has in tank at the moment is a air stone gently bubbling

Young fry are very delicate. Good water quality is crucial. You must add more water to keep to temperature stable.
Aged dechlorinated water is perferable over water from another tank. Siphon the new water slowly through a small tubing so as not to shock the fry. Try to keep temperature and pH constant.
No need to worry about cycling the tank yet. The fry will not be producing enough waste to present a problem. Unless you have hundreds of them. Do you?
Just don't over feed. Decaying food will eat up all the oxygen and sufficate your fry. Keep an eye on the Ammonia and Nitrite. Use a water conditioner like Amquel plus or Prime to neutralize the toxic stuff. Change water often until the tank is cycled.

i used the fluval with the stocking for my fry, but i didn't add it until they were over a week old, to give them time to get used to swimming. I never ahd any problems with it, and left the stocking over it until recently. I would say about the first 6 weeks or so. Now they are big enough that they won't be sucked in, and they are used to the current in the tank by now.

Good luck!

you should also take some water out and pour fresh water in
this will help you clean some of the matter/waste in the water
since your not using a filter

ive bought a sponge filter and the fry have been free swimmers for 2 days now - im adding liqufry for last 2 days - when do i move on to powder food or brine shrimp?

I havent changed water yet but will do - the height is 5 inches - do I need more water ?
