Full Version: Red Oranda In Small Pond

Hi I have one redcap oranda in my small pond (180~ gals). There are 5 other gold fishes (2"-6") in the pond as well. The oranda seems to be always hiding behind a rock. As far as I can tell it is not sick. Every once in a while he comes out and eat at the feeding time. Also at night hecomes out and eats(?) algae and other green stuff hanging from pond wall.

So my question is are the oranda's by nature a bit shy type fish which stays away from other fishes? I have been thinking of getting another oranda to keep it company. But thought I would ask here first

So, your other fish are not orandas? If they are something like shubunkin or comet, the faster moving kind of goldfish, your oranda might be intimidated by them. What kind are your other fish? smile.gif

Yea, my other fishes are not oranda. They are variety of small gold fishes.

2 medim (4-5") comets
1 unknown gold fish (6")
1 feeder fish. Got him about 2 inches now he is over 3
1 koi golden ogden (?)
1 Redcap Oranda

You are right the other fishes are much faster than the oranda. That's why I asked specifically asked at the petshop if he would be ok with the other faster fishes. They said he would be fine. Also at feeding time I stay around to make sure he gets something to eat. If he is intimidated (although I never saw anyone chasing him) would it help if I get another oranda? Or would that make things worse?

Thanks ranchugirl

Well, another oranda might help, but I would try something to separate those two then from the faster fish. Especially a koi can be a bit on the nippy side, constantly bothering slower fish. I have 5 6 inch koi which I bought last month, and they are all very bad fish when it comes to bothering a larger comet, and I had to take him out, despite his size (almost double than the koi).
At homedepot they sell something called Eggcrates, its nothing but a white plastic, looking like of net like. You can cut that to any size you want, just find a a spot in your tank where it might fit into, and instant separation with the comfort of filtration for both sides! smile.gif

Thanks ranchugirl. I will go and see if I can find those at local home depot. I got another oranda today. It's been a couple of hours he has been in the pond. Seems to be doing ok and looks like this one is much more friendlier than the older one. Although occassioanlly it is getting chased by a medium comet. The koi does not have any interest in the orandas in general. Is the the mid size comet which is usually a bit agressive. Not sure why. Anyway thanks for you advice !

I don't put my Oranda's in my pond with Koi or Comets because they are so fast that the Oranda's tend to get run over by them. I have all of my Oranda's in one section of my pond and they love it with fish similar to them.

As suggested I was going to buy a separator for the orandas. But looks like all on a sudden they are all getting along fine now ! There is not as much chasing as there were initially and the orandas are not hiding under the rocks anymore ! They are all swimming side by side. A site I did not think I would see just a few days ago.

Thanks everyone
