I have a 10 OZ (290g) tin of Tetra Brand Min sticks for my goldies. $15.00(pellets). It's got about a quarter of the tin left in it and I've been feeding my goldies this for over a year now. Gawd it's lasted a long time.... wakka wakka

I have 3 large orandas (4-7 inches), one small black moor (2 inches), and a common ( 4 inches ) + 2 medium size weather loaches.

I also feed my goldies green peas and other veggies. The odd worm and bug in the summer time.. hehe.

Do you think my pellets have an expiry date? I see nothing on the jar. I'm wondering how fast you all go through your food? blink.gif

Lets see. I have had my fish for goin on 3 months. The first jar of food I bought is a 0.92 oz container of Nutrafin Max. And that has about and eighth of the food left. And about a month and a half ago, I started feeding ColorFin Sinking Granules. I have a 3.52 oz container of that, and there is about 3/4 of it left. I feed peas one a week as well. SO yeah, I guess it does last a while. The Nutrafin Max says August 05 on the bottome of the jar. However there is no date on my ColorFin. Just my .02

Eeeeh, thats soooo naaasty. rofl3.gif Eeeeeeh, year old pellets. LOL Thats like eating the potato chips that fell to the back of the pantry a year ago. rofl3.gif I can't help myself here I just had to say something Hungry.gif yuma.gif That's to classic. You might wanna get your children some new food.

I feed until the expiry date. Sometimes that is a year, or close too it. Hey I didn't pay $40 to chuck out a bag of food early. I wait until the expiry month spit.gif I have a giant bag of Hikari Lionhead, among other types of food. I live in hicksville so everything here costs a fortune.

I'm not sure what I would do if the food did not have an expiry date listed.

Anyway your "wakka, wakka" just about made me bust a gut!!

I wouldn't go over a year. I don't think that expired dried food would harm the goldies but the nutritional value is probably affected. rolleyes.gif

I hope there's a big difference between potatoe chips and dried/compressed pellets. My fish haven't been complaining. They go crazy eating them. I just figured that i've kept the container in dark storage, free from humidity. It's lined with some sort of silver insulate etc... And i didn't really pay attention to the time factor until now. Yowsers.

Anyway, I contacted the store and they recommended a year also. I'll go buy a new 'smaller' container soon. This container I have now is the original one I bought with my fish.

Sushoomee ...I'll have to ask my fish if they taste like that rofl3.gif

I go thru food very fast. I have a 5 pound bag of pellets and the container can hold 3 or 4 ounces. I go thru that in like a week and thats counting the shrimp I feed em too. If my math serves me right, my 20+ goldies can eat a 5 pound bag in 6 months or so!

You're not going to want to hear this, but fish food definitely does have an expiry period: three months. After three months the nutritional value starts going downhill rapidly. If you're feeding year-old fish food, then you'll need to be very careful about nutritional deficiencies. The fish probably still find it tasty due to the flavourings added to it, but the vitamins, proteins, fats etc. will be long gone. The best thing with fish food is to buy small pots, use it up quickly and replace it.

Sorry about that! smile.gif

Well thank goodness I've been feeding them other things like veggies and some flake food. ###### fish store really took me on a ride when I got started in the goldfish world. "Buy the bigger jar as it's the most economical".

For the record, my fish are healthy and active.

Three months? I had always learned 6 months...

Welp, I hate to break the 3 month rule, the 1 year rule and the 6 month rule, but I'm only buying food with expiry dates on the container from now on. And throw out the food once that date arrives. Otherwise It's "take out" from now on. hehehe rofl3.gif

OOps... I must have used a bad word in my previous post. I hope it wasn't too bad as I'm not one to speak like that. I think it was the D word.... Sorry

Don't worry about it. smile.gif The board automatically removes the D-word (which is handy, because I sometimes post it too!).

opps some of my pellet food is over a yr sad.gif
i cant really do much because the flake food will
run out too fast and the pellet food last ages
got any ideas?

I'm going to the petstore and buying a smaller containerful and only use it for 6 months. Hopefully I get a size that accomidates that timeframe.

Or i'll have to start eating them for breakfast too! spit.gif
