WHen you treat a fish for fin rot using a salt bath...how often do you repeat it??

AndI would like to post that the 2 fish in my avatar (Bob and Nameless) tripled in size over the past few month....but sadlt they passed away one right after the ohter from a fluctuation in the water parameters. cry3.gif

But, due to them no longer needing a tank...I have gotten new Mollies...which unfortunately have fin rot (nooppee boom.gif )Which I believe I have now gotten under contol.

Incidentally, While in nnnnnn I saw a white koi in a 5 gallon with 2 other koi. This koi had one eye was deformed wiht almost NO SCALES and it looked like it had been in a fight with a food processor. Basically it looked like grilled salmon that was still alive!

nnnnnn is absolutly the worst possible place to get fish and fish foods boom.gif I got my first fish there and he is still alive about 3 years later. All other nnnnnn fish I have are... cry3.gif ...gone...

I realize that...but I really wanted a dalmation molly and over the past 2 months I had only seen them at nooppee so that is wherw I got them.

I knew that one had fin rot but as it was the only one left of it's kind and it would be going into a new aquarium with nothing bt other nooppee mollies (bought at the same time)....I decided to treat the fin rot rather than wait another 2 months to find them again.

ps. My nooppee actually has a good selection of fish food and supplies...its just the fish that you have to be careful of. It might be different in other places though

Honestly, the nnnnnn closest to me is actually better than the Petland near me. When I was in nnnnnn last night the lady was telling a customer that they recently changed suppliers for the fish b/c the previous one had been selling them sick fish, which they did not approve of. The time before that the guy was encouraging a women to get a smaller tropical fish (come kind of tetra I didn't pay much attention to what kind), rather than a goldie because the goldie "produces a lot of waste and would need more space".

In contrast Petland had bettas that had been dead in their bowls so long they were ROTTING and in Petco they were telling a woman to put a male and female betta together in a tank less than 5 gallons (not to breed, just to keep that way).

About the salt bath. I would just do it once. And add salt to the water, bring it up to a 0.3% concentration. That is 3 tablespoons per 5 gallons, but don't add it all at once. Add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, then 12 hours later do the same, and then 12 hours later add the final 1 tbs per 5 gals.

I would take a cotton ball soaked with hydrogen peroxide and swab the tail or whereever is effected by the finrot on the fish.
I would repeat the peroxide as necessary (no more than once a day though!)

I recieved this advice from someone at Koi Canada. It worked very well for me.

Oh and the water conditions have to be as perfect as possible to get this to work!

Good luck biggrin.gif

Whoops that will TEACH me to read closer. The advice I gave was for Goldfish, I don't do tropicals (other than betta's) so I have no clue if you would do the same thing for mollies.

Good luck

Thanks anyway......and By the way the nxt day after seeing that mutilated koi.....It was gone. I sorta feel bad for the fishy but I think it was for the best that it died.

I prefer antibiotics when treating finrot. It depends on how advanced it is but I feel its more effective than salt. Thats just me though, and my experience. A combo of Maracyn and Maracyn II has worked well for me.

Mollies are great fish though they tend to be a bit delicate. Did you know they can actually be converted to brackish or saltwater? At the moment our store has a sailfin molly in one of our saltwater tanks! They actually do much better with some aquarium salt in their water. Good luck in treating them. I love dalmation mollies. smile.gif

As an Update.......The female dalmation died as well for no known reason-----probably stress. The male and femal have been replaced so I have a new black molly male and mostly black dalmation female now. Also there are now 10 tsp of salt in the ten gallon. My guppy and dal. molly are pregnant and no death for over a week which i guess is a good sign.
