i dont know if this will be of any assistance......but we had a fish (an Oranda). we got him home and he soon started to float on the surface.....he had a major boyancy problem and for 4 months he floated at the surface for about 75% of the time. one day he just stopped and has never floated since. now, this was probably an extreme case....we had a hard time diagnosing this, as he seemed to be fine and lasted 4 months of floating belly up.
usually when floating occurs its a sign of a swim bladder disease. feading your fish soft peas is usually a good solution.
look up something on swimbladder to determine if your fish has the signs, usually different websites offer various solutions

Sian, from advices I've received, fasting (1-2 days) and then feeding laxative-ish foods have been the way to go. My goldie, although still having swim bladder remnants has stopped floating upside down after feeding it peas and frozen worms. I suppose continuing a varied diet (soaking dried/floating food as well) might help it in the long run, like what kelly has experienced

What your fish(es) are doing sounds similar to what my fish is doing. I don't know much about goldfish, I don't even know what specific breed my fish is. He is all white and has a bright orange head. And I don't know what exactly a swim bladder is or if my fish even has that, but he has been floating upside down or on his side for about 24 hours now. He isn't very lethargic though. Any advice you could give me on how to treat him and help him get better would be much appreciated. Thanks! And I hope your fish are doing alright!

My fish died this morning as well...Apparently it was a bad day for fish. But I plan on getting a new one soon so if that one has any problems, I know where to come! Thanks for everyone's help
