First, let me say thanks before anyone even replies! Thanks for reading this, and always helping everyone on here with their questions...

I have a ten gallon tank, that is completely cycled with Biospira, and I was thinking of putting a betta in there (a male) or possibly two females. First, is that large enough for two fish? Second, I have a Penguin 170 with Biowheel and I've heard that Bettas like it better with less water movement, would this filter be too much for them? Also, does this mean no airstones as well? And I think I heard I should densly plant the tank...which I'll do with real plants...

Thanks again!

you can put upto 7 female bettas in a ten gallon. i wouldn't add them all at once if you do decide to do that though. they are GREAT fish, i just love their personality.females love densely planted tanks, as they like to hide and sit on the plants.

males i would add only one and get a opaque divider if you want to divide the tank in two and put two males in there. males enjoy planted aquariums, it gives them a place to sit and swim around.

if you find that your filter moves the surface of the water alot, just tie a piece of filter floss at the output so that it goes through that and weakens the flow

you do not need an airstone because bettas have a labryinth organ that they breath out of at the surface of the water.

If you get females, they probably will not care about the flow, and may even like it. Don't get two though, get more like 5, with two or 3 I've heard they have a tendency to pick on one fish to death.

If you get males, you will have more problems with filtration because you will need to have dividers, which will interupt the flow.

Whichever you get, lots of plants are good, they will help break up territory and keep everyone calm. Bettas also love to sit on the plants and rest, they are silly that way.

When I got my females, I got 7 from a tank at the lfs that housed female bettas. I chose 7 and brought them all home, and put them in my cycled 10 gallon, all together. There wasn't much aggression in the first few days, I guess because they had been used to living in a group of females at the store. They get along great now biggrin.gif

If you buy females that have been kept in the little cups separately, I would watch them carefully for the first few days and make sure there isn't a bully. If one of the females gets too aggressive with the others she would have to be removed. You could try putting her in a little breeding basket in the tank for a few days and see if she was calmer when you let her out.

I would go with between 4-7 females. As the previous posted mentioned 2 or 3 really isn't a great number. The females do better in a larger group, I think.

Wow I never imagined that I could get so many bettas in such a small tank! Compared to what I've known with goldfish at least, hehe. They are going to be so beautiful wub.gif

I'll have to wait a little bit though, since I don't have the money for 4 fish plus a bunch of live plants! BTW do Bettas chow down on plants the way goldies do? I hope not!!!

Bettas are tropicals, so tropical rules apply biggrin.gif One inch of fish per gallon of water. I know, it does seem strange after goldfish, doesn't it?

And No! bettas do not eat plants. You can buy all of the lovely plants you desire for your betta tank. Bettas are carnivores, so good for your plants biggrin.gif

Female bettas are usually pretty inexpensive, so hopefully you won't have to wait too long.
