how many gph do i need for a filter for 5.5 gallon tank? Please answer quick I'm on my way to buy
touchofsky
I use AquaClear mini's on my 5.5 gallon tanks.
celebr8monkeyday
do you know how many gph that does? Cause Im actually going some other time to the pet store cause it was closed tonight. And then I'll take some time to look for the right gph. I don't know why most of them don't just put on there how many gallons its for instead of doing gph. They should sell betta filters.

100 gph for the aquaclear minis. It says you can use it for up to a 20 gal tank. I loff aquaclears. wub.gif

HAAHAA I put 100 gals per minute.....imagine that....a mini niagara falls filter rofl3.gif

And you use these with your betta tanks and it doesnt create too much movement of the water?
Black oranda
ohmy.gif i use the exact same thing as touchofsky.

I do too. And for bettas not supposing to like alot of current, mine don't seem to care either way. I have two different ones that I have actually seen swimming purposely through it

They do put what gallons the filters are for as well as gph on most of them, but we don't like to go by that because the manufacturer will tell you that a 200gph filter will work on a tank up to 30 or 40 gallons for instance.

Get a filter meant for a a 10-20 gallonish tank (~100gph), that is adjustable. Then if you need to you can turn it down (I belive the lowest setting is about 1/3 the highest?).

My female betta has never been bothered by current, but the male isn't fond of it. I ended up just using a sponge filter in my betta tank.

If you find that your betta doesn't like the current, you can just drape a piece of filter floss in front of the outflow of the water. I cut a rectangle from filter material that I buy cheaply from the pet shop, and put one end under the edge of the lid to hold it, then drape it down into the water so that the outflow goes through it. This reduces the current to next to nothing. One of my bettas sleeps behind the filter floss biggrin.gif

I usally keep my filter off the week and the weekend i turn
it on,so he can have at least alittle fun makeing
his bubble nest he doesn't mind the current
but sometimes i will close it for his bubble nest.

Are Aquaclear mini's ajustable? I had one that does 100gph and Its way too much. The gravel at the bottom is blown around! But It doesn't adjust and I thought they all do. And I don't want to do the filter floss thing because I just want to keep everything neat and clean and anytime I do somthing myself it looks horrible lol.
touchofsky
Yes, the AquaClears are adjustable. You can adjust the flow rate from low to high, and low is really just a trickle.

rofl3.gif I was just doing a water change in my goldfish tank and I realized that I have an Aquaclear mini! I always had it on the highest for my goldfish so I never realized how low it can really go. Ok I'll get one of those biggrin.gif

Lol thanks for the advice!

I actually have a 5.5 gallons tank too, and hosting a corydoras catfish, a pleco and of course, Clown, my beautiful betta.
I have a very powerful filter (penguin 170) and the Betta really like to fight the current, swimming against it.
He has spots where he can rest and where water doesn't move almost, but generally, I see him swimming around smile.gif.
Even if they are so easy to keep with minimal filtration, I believe that they are happy with space and good quality filtered water.
I also have a 75 gallons tank with cichlids (convicts and managuense) and a medium size pleco. Fishes are great !!!
