I dont think very many people know about all Chocolates problems except maybe a few members who've been around a while but they're back......
Choc hasnt eaten is 10 day.(!) He refuses anything and everything I offer. How long can a Betta go without food?

(I copied this from the GF diseases so I dont forget anything)

Ammonia Level-0

Tank size(How many Gals) and How long has it been running-2 gallon; its not cycled
Nitrite-0

How often do you change the water and how much? 100% changes every 5 days

Nitrate-0; not cycled

Filtration-none

Ph Level 7.6

Water additives/conditioners-AmQuel+ (removes nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, chlorine, and chloramines)

What do you feed your fish?-Hikari Betta Bites, peas, blood worms, tubifex worms, tropical pellets

Medications add to the tank? -Triple Sulfa by Aquairum Pharmaceuticals(sulfathiazole, sulfamethazine, sulfa
etamide)

How many fish in the tank and there size?-no fish

Any new fish added to the tank? nope

Any unusual findings on the fish? Such as "grains of salt", bloody streaks, frayed fins, fungus-sometimes red lumps on the tips of his fins.......

Any unusual behavior? Like staying at the bottom, not eating, ect.. -listlessness, not eating, clamped fins.......

Choc has a long history with being ill. He was sick when I bought him but he was white and I had to have him. A little salt made him better. Then he was sick again with popeye again more salt. Then he wedged himself into a terra cotta pot and had a huge wound and I didnt think he'd make it but he did and with only a scar. Hes always been a picky eater but couldnt resist his Betta Bites.Sometimes hewould stop eating for a day or so but he never went too long without food. Now from his symptom it seemed he might have an internal bacteria infection so hes being treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic.(Todays day 3 of a 4 day treatment schedule) Hes is the same from this treatment so far
Any ideas?? Help would being extremely appreciated!!!
Thanks,
touchofsky
Perhaps you could try him with a tiny bit of raw fish or shrimp?

I hope Choc makes it. I remember all of his problems. Poor baby, I thought he was healthy now cry3.gif

Can he see any other fish? If not do you have another betta that you could move beside him (in seperate containers of course because he is sick).

Sometimes seeing another fish will get them to eat... being competitive and all. It might not work though, depending on how ill Choc is. But I think it would be worth a try. It's worked for me a few times.

I hope that Choc gets all better.

when i was in the pet store the other day, i saw this product..
it was garlic something..
that you would put the food into, and it claims that this will make even the finicky eaters eat...

i think it was just garlic extract with a preservative.. (you can also search on dr.fosters, i think i saw sonething like that there too)

i have read that betas can be real buggers with eating.. so, i just thought i'd pass this along.

it also said, to wash your hands, and to not wiggle your fingers in the water after you have touched it, because the smell will be in a lot of different places and can confuse the fish to where the food is..

**i would think... if you smushed some fresh garlic.. and rubbed it on his.. beta bites.. this would be just as effective and better (no preservative) and cheaper (it was like an 8oz bottle lol)**

also, garlic has a natural immune inhancing agent in it, that works for humans and for fish... so if he's a bit under the weather, well ... **shruggs** its a suggestion smile.gif

good luck.

well soon.

Jessica's idea of moving another fish near him so he can see him is a good idea. When I first got Jake, he wouldn't eat, but once I divided his tank and put Flame in with him on the other side, his appetite suddenly appeared. I guess as Jess mentioned, the spirit of competition.

Actually Chocolate was in a divided 5 with Azule and he still didnt eat. I have a feeling Choc's time is running out. He is so tiny and fragile. Ill have to take a pic of him when I get my camera back.
Im going to try garlic tough
Thanks for the suggestions, they are appreciated,
Nykole
Does anyone have any other ideas? He is looking worse......................

Not a great chance but Daddio ate a ghoat shrimp once. Maybe if you got a small one Choc would find the "hunt" entice(sp?) him to eat.

listlessness, clamped fins, no appetite, this is all signs of a bacterial infection which I would treat with either jungle fungus eliminator or regular maracyn. salt is probably not going to help him. i know the jungle one says "fungus", but the medication inside is for bacteria that is often mistaken as fungus. maracyn would take care of any flexibacter problems that he might have. do not use the medications together. pick one smile.gif

question- how does his mouth look? take a look at it and tell me if it looks abnormal. usualy when there is no appetite, there is a reason for this. when female bettas that i've had get attacked with flexibacter, their mouths swell ("mouth fungus") and get irritated. it is painful/impossible for them to eat this way. Do you have a hospital tank? i would suggest getting either of these two medicines and treat him in a 5 or 10 gallon tank (to make sure you don't overdose)

I treid the garlic, still not eating.

Jewell,
Choc loves ghost shrimp, especially the hunt but he still didnt eat.......

Yesterday was his last dose of a broad spectrum antibiotic. I (in my 1st post) also stated I tough it sounded like a bacterial infection. Should I treat with Maracyn now that his antibiotic treatment is through?? I really dont know what else to do. Its hard seeing my little boy so sick sad.gif . The antibiotic has done nothing for him. I dont have any salt in the tank now.

His mouth does look normal, no fuzzies or cottonish. But he is holding his mouth slightly open. What is flexibacter? I dont think Ive ever heard of it before.
Thanks for your help,
