All my goldies died of ick again! cry3.gif I have decided to quit goldfish keeping for a while. I want to try breeding bettas. Has anyone else had any luck with this? Does anyone have any advice for breeding bettas? huh.gif

tongue.gif i;ve already considered breeding bettas.
You will need at least a 5 to 10 gallon.
And will need a pair of bettas female and male.
You will also need lots of live food and loads of jars for the
male bettas (the fry) and lots of live plants.

You will also need filtration, and a heater. (this is just the main
you need to know for now wink.gif)

First thing to do is pick out a trio, one male and two females or vice versa, and start conditioning them on good food. Live, frozen and freeze dried, fed twice daily for two weeks. If you're unsure of the conditions the fish were kept in before, and are worried about their health, then watch them for a few weeks before conditioning.

You'll also need to get ahold of some live food, microworms are cheap and easy, and great food. I don't use bbs but some use it sparingly, and apparently vinegar eels are good too, but take a while to become established, and can be difficult to harvest.

The setup Black Oranda mentioned is what you'll need to look at too, I personally wouldn't spawn in less than a 10 gallon, but if you're diligent with water changes then a five would be okay!
Jillian
do you have time to watch the pair spawning and recording the actions all day for two-3 days?
do you have enough space to raise up to 1000 fry?
do you have time to feed each fry 3 times a day?
do you have enough water and conditioner and medicine and time to do weekly water changes in each jar?

PLEASE think about this before you start, or you will be very dissapointed when all of your fry and/or the parents die. it's a VERY long involved process adn shouldn't be taken lightly. If you are having trouble raising goldfish, maybe betta breeding isn't the right thing for you at this moment. i'm not saying don't do it, but just be totally prepared for it. remember, learn learn learn and THEN try!! wink.gif

I breed betta's. Use a 10 gallon NOT 5. More the space better the chance. Use a heater, live plant, sponge filter (no other type), and half of a styrafoam cup. One side of the tank have the filter, and plant and on the other side have the half cup. The cup is for the male's bubble nest. The heater should go in the side the tank in the middle of the back. Here are some links to some breeding sites. IF you need help PLEASE e-mail me. PLEASE make sure your ready before you start.
