Hi, we have a new male Betta, just got him a few days ago in a one gallon acrylic mini aquarium with under gravel filter, bubbler tube with it for air flow.

Have a 10 gallon tank, cycled already a year ago from goldfish. would like to move Betta to this tank, and want to add tankmates for him, Tetras, etc. as suggested here.

Wondering if we should move the Betta to the 10gallon tank, and what about quarantining any new fish?? would the 1 gallon be a bad idea to try and isolate the new fish, like Tetras?? We've never done this with a 1 gallon, just wondering here.

We don't want to pass any diseases on to Betta or vice versa? Are Bettas pretty hardy fish when it comes to diseases like Ick, etc.?

We are using Spring or Drinking water that is bottled for the Bettas water right now too. no heater in the 1 gallon of course.. just the lighted hood.

has anyone ever done this type of quarantine or is it way too small for a group of Tetras for 2wks time period? is 2 wks long enough? some have done it for longer I know, like 4weeks.

I love Martinez's girl Bettas.. wow! haven't seen any so pretty in our local pet stores... wonder where he/she finds them?

thanks for your help, we are new to Betta care and are a bit nervous right now with the tiny 1 gallon tank and all. we've heard more people having Bettas live in larger tanks than small ones so far...

Hi!
What have you been using as a source of ammonia for your cycled tank?

Yes 1 gallon is WAY too small for a q-tine, sorry. Plus it's unheated. I would think about what type of tetra you want, run it by us here first, and use the 10g for just the tetras, and the 1 gallon for the betta. Then after 2-3 weeks add the betta smile.gif
Bettas can be very delicate.

Does the water say it's distilled, RO (reverse osmosis), mineral water, or spring water? Certain types of bottled water can be detrimental to your fish.
Do you have readings for kH and pH? That will help with tetra selection!

B) Hi, I don't understand your question about my source of ammonia in the 10gallon tank? It has been cycled from having fancy goldfish in it for about 5 months, have checked levels on everything, has been good. We have gravel in it, undergravel filter and also ProQuatics hanging filter, so it's very filtered, water is good.
After the goldfish were moved to the 60 gallon tank, we had Mollies living in it for almost a year, had babies too, and a Bristlenose Dwarf Pleco lived there too, he is now in the 60 gallon... so fish have lived well in the 10gallon tank.

The bottled water we use for the Betta has been Drinking Water (yes reverse osmosis), the pet store said it was okay or Spring Water too, just not distilled cause all of the minerals are taken out..

I didnt' realize the KH and PH are so vital to choice of Tetras??? why?

I will test both of these and come back and post them okay? thanks for your help!

So there are fish living in the 10 gallon now? For the bacteria to live, there must be a source of ammonia, such as fish or commercial ammonia products. If there haven't been fish in there for more than a few days then I'm afraid you'll have to start over from scratch..

RO water is pure, like distilled water. I used it for my bettas for several months, thinking it was 'spring water' like it said on the bottles, until I found out it was RO! I had actually been getting pH swings from the ammonia close to water change day, because there was no kH to buffer the water. So I switched back to tap water, and although it didn't do my fish any immediate harm, it could have had some long-term effects. What's wrong with your tap water?

kH and pH aren't vital, but they do help. Most tank bred fish can adapt to your local conditions, but some less hardy/domesticated fish should be matched to your water if you can. It's just a good thing to know smile.gif

What sort of tetras were you thinking?
