How many female bettas can live in a 10 gallon tank? And can you put a female betta with goldfish?
touchofsky
I have 7 females in my 10 gallon tank. I am probably pushing it a little, but with regular water changes, and good filtration, the water parameters stay excellent. Four or five would probably be the recommended number smile.gif

I don't know about females and goldfish. I guess the big thing would be temperature, although I keep my females at 72 f.

Are you supposed to heat your betta tank? My two bettas are in room temperature water.

Bettas should not be put in with goldfish!

You said your bettas are at room temp.. what is that? Everybody's apartment/house is a different temp...
celebr8monkeyday
hmm idk lol. Its probably in the 60's.

bettas don't do well in temperatures under 70 f. I keep my heater in my female betta tank set at 72 f. The temperature rises a bit during the day because of the light, but then at night it will drop to 72 f.

I actually have my male betta heaters set higher than that, and keep them around 76 f. Again, the lights raise the temperature during the day. They seem to do better at a higher temperature, or they seem more lively, anyway.

Thats why I asked how cool your house is... Time for you to get a heater! And a thermometer!
celebr8monkeyday
do heaters take up a lot of room?
touchofsky
No, they are small. What size tank do you have?
Black oranda
I would give them at least 2 gallons each so you would put
5 female bettas would be best.
You should only put female bettas togther if they were
grown up togther in the tank allthogher or else some can
be as agressive like the males sad.gif

I would probably get them a ten gallon tank. I'm not sure If I will yet though because Right now I have a 15 or somthing gallon fish tank for my goldfish, a 2.5 gallon for marley, and now a 10 gallon for poseidon. So I might try to put marley and Posiedon together in the 10 gallon tank with a divider. Then have the 2.5 for females? Is that too small? It probably is...
touchofsky
You could divid your 10 into three sections. I did that with one of my 10's and it gives over 3 gallons of space for each fish.

I would think that the 2 would be pushing it for more than one betta. Also, it isn't a good idea to keep 2 females together. I find that there is always one that is stronger and bullies the other. Three isn't the greatest number, either. I think that four and more is the best since it seems that at that number there isn't one "underdog".

You can introduce female bettas that have been jarred, but you have to keep a close eye on them for the first few days, and if any are overly aggressive and do actual physical damage to their tankmates, they would have to be removed. As Black Oranda mentioned, it is easiest to get females that have lived in communal tanks, then you know that they can live together. Even then, in the first few days, they will establish a pecking order and there will be some chasing, however, in a couple of days that usually settles down.

My 7 girls get along great now, and they make a beautiful tank with all of their bright colours.

Nevermind I realized that this tank is 5.5 gallons not ten. So that means that my goldfish one is about 10. So I think Im not gonna get any females. Mabye just some tetras. Oh well.
Black oranda
sad.gif maby in the future you will be able?
But im sure your male betta would love to live in a 5 gallon
i know that my betta does biggrin.gif
celebr8monkeyday
He does, He has just been floating around all over the place. Hes really using all the extra room. And I have his old plant in there and its one of those really small ones, but i keep noticing him cuddling up under it when hes tired smile.gif I can't wait to get the tetras.
Black oranda
That's great!,im sure he is very happy.
My betta sure is happy and he swims around and
flares ect ect.
And he makes his bubble nests.Have your bettas been building
any?

It should be at room temp. BUT if your breeding the breeding tank should be 80-83F.
celebr8monkeyday
Neither build bubble nests... I dont know why... sad.gif They seem happy...

And I'm not breeding, but I think I'm going to get a heater just to make them more comfortable.

Do any of you have female betta pics that you could show? Just wondering what they look like compared to the males. I've only seen a female once and I really didn't pay too much attention to what she really looked like. sad.gif Now I'm kind of interested in getting one.
touchofsky
I am hoping this works biggrin.gif I posted pictures of my 7 girls a while back. These pictures were taken when I first got them.
