My "rescue" Betta(I havent named him yet) is very chubby and now that I think about, I havent seen him poop or seen any poop in his tank. So do you think hes constipated? Luckily hes an excellant eater and he ate a few Betta sized pieces of peas. Will it clear him out like it does GF? Should I only feed him peas for a few days? He normally eats 7 Hikari Betta Bites twice a day. I soak them until they expand somewhat.
Thanks,
Nykole

Oh hes no "little guy!" Hes quite big and never seems full. I feed him all he can eat within a few minutes. He swims away when hes full so I'll continue feeding him until hes finished.
My question still hasnt been exactly answered: Do peas clear out Bettas as they do GF?

Yes, peas will act as a laxative.

Should peas be madee a part of their regular diet?

Unless he is one of Phil Lafferty's "giant" bettas, there is no way he should be eating that much. Which would explain his constipation. Starve him for four days, feed a small piece of pea. Make sure he poops before feeding again.
His stomach IS the size of his eye. He should only have about 2 pellets 2x a day. That will be plenty! It also helps to have one day a week to starve them as a regular routine.
I may sound harsh, but I had a stubbornly constipated female betta that LITERALLY exploded last week. Not a pretty sight, I assure you. Fish and dogs will eat constantly, they don't really register that they're 'full'.

Thanks for your concern but I have the situation under control.

I dont agree about dogs not knowing when they are full.......

Also my Bettas do swim away after they eaten a satisfying amount of food thats why I have to clean up after every feeding.......

I feed 5-6 pellets twice a day, but maybe my pellets are smaller? Anyway that is barely enough food for my bettas, 2 of my bettas are really big though.
Oh and my dog hardly eats. Haahaa, I have to feed him raw meat on his kibble.
Nykole is your Doberman a picky eater? Mine is!!

Jessica,
You have a Dobe too dont you? And he hardly eats?!?! Ive never met a Dobe who wasnt a pig!

How old is your boy?
No my Dobe isnt a picky eater, to her food that hits the ground is fair game. She eats about 4 cups of kibble a day too.
Heres a pic of my girl, Angel.....

Sorry I guess I missed why you posted in the first place...
Just a fair warning. Cleaning up bits of betta innards floating all around your tank and a gorgeous fish with a hole blown out of her stomach is NOT worth risking.
As for the dog issue, well, each to their own, but I've never heard of people keeping dogs dishes full all the time like cats..

I shouldnt explain myself but I guess I wil.......
I posted because I wanted a few opinions about the whole constipated/chubby Bettas issue but over these 5 or 6 days I figured out what I needed......
I DONT free feed my dogs, I measure out a specific amount and they eat it through out the day.......

Okay then glad you figured it out, I didn't know that from your previous posts. I guess I sound pretty stupid to you but thanks for explaining yourself to me.
I just made the dog comment to illustrate my point, people regulate dog's meals so they don't overeat and make themselves sick (like mine try very hard to do), and likewise fish food should be regulated by the owner and not the animal, with their best interest in mind. It was a comparison between dogs and fish, with a side of cat contrast..
Good luck.

It's not that animals do not know when they are full. They do know, but they all (even people, this is part of why so many humans get fat) came from environments where food is not always easy to obtain and when it was available it was in the interest of survival to eat all you could. Then we stick them in these environments where we give them food they don't have to work for, and make it much more nutritionally concentrated than what they would normally be eating, and think they are stupid b/c they gorge themselves on it and end up sick as a result.
Plenty of cats cannot be free fed, I know ours can't, she would be fat within a couple of weeks.

My cats are freefed, and my dog eats about 3 cups of food a day. I fill his bowl in the morning and he picks at it until supper LOL which I fill it again with the other 1 1/2 cup and raw meat. He could be fed free choice, but the food in his bowl would go stale before he ate it all. Heeheehee.
He lives for apples though.
Nykole Angel is beautiful. Here is Baron.

Oh my gosh Jessica!! Baron is absolutely stunning!!!! I want!! I want!!
Im hoping to add another Dobe to the fur gang within a year and a half.
Did you get hm from a private breeder? There is a breeder in Cananda that I would LOVE a pup from. They have the most beautiful dogs.
