I am not positive, but I don't believe that brown algae is as benefical as green algae because it doesn't reduce nitrate levels.

I think that brown algae is from not having enough light to make the algae green, does any one else know?

I have brown algae, too. I just clean it off. wink.gif

Hutchtaz, yup i think you are correct.
The green algea is when your tank has lots of light sun ect ect.
the brown algea doesn't get enough of light
so it doesn't turn into green.

brown is jus the beginning.. with enough light, brown algae start to grow.. eventually, with better water quality (well cycled) and the same amount of lighting, the brown start to turn green..

brown is as benefitial, but not efficient.. as the food making process (that use up nitrAte) is weaker than the green one.. and they are not as beautiful (looks like poop actually) but I am saving all the green algae now. but in a controlled manner though.. dun want my tank to be over infested.. always let them staying in growing stage, as plant grow, they reach a SPREADING stage and that's very hard to control where you may even need to remove everything from the tank for treatment and hard scrubbing.

I have brown algae too. I posted on it a few ago and everyone said it was fine and not to worry about it. If it is on the sides of the tank just wipe the glass down with a regular paper towel before you do your water change and it should be fine. Mine was really bad (all over my gravel) and it looked like poop. I bought an algae eater and it it much better now. I don't know exactly what kind of fish it is, but at petsmart it just said algae eater. It looks almost like a guppie but its mouth is turned down. It smiws around like a fish but eats up all the algae. He has been a great addition to my tank.

Good luck.
