For the pea question ... I use frozen peas to feed to my goldfish which I get at the local grocery store, I rinse them under hot water to thaw them, pop them out of their skin, and break them into suitable sized pieces for my fish to eat.

I think hikari is a good food. My gf loves the pellets. Make sure the flakes you have aren't for babies. I almost bought the flakes and then my boyfriend pointed out that they were for fry. Hopefully yours aren't. And even if they are, i'm not sure it makes a difference anyway.

Do the peas have to be unsalted?

Good question ray,
I actually asked that question at a food seminar and the speaker said it was Ok. I only use frozen peas (green giant brand) and have never had a problem. I would stay away from anything that is canned. If you use anything canned the salt level will be high and the nutrition lower.

Frozen peas almost always have "trace of salt" under the ingredients, but I assume such a small amount won't affect your fish.
