By accident, I believe the Female Ranchu laid eggs this morning. I am totally unprepared. WHat is the easiest way for me to prepare??? I just gave away my small 5 gallon tank. And I only have a 10, 20 and 38 gallon tank as of right now.

At first I saw the male chasing the other, but I just thought he was being aggressive to the new Ranchu in the tank. But I guess that was mating. By the time I realized that the female was laying eggs i believe that the quite a few eggs are in the filter. Since then I have turned it off.

I am off to the LFS for supplies. I will be looking for a sponge filter, what else do I need???? Probably fry food.

Please help.

Thanks for the advice in advance!!!!

Congrats on your babies.

I am raising mine in a 10 gallon. I filled it half full to start and added the eggs (they were all stuck on plants)

Then I added a sponge filter.

The eggs hatched. After they are free swimming you can feed them (They stick to the glass and stuff for a few days and just swim in short bursts you don't need to feed them while they are doing that) . I fed hard boiled egg yolk, crushed into a powder, powdered fry food, and after a week or two, fresh hatched baby brine shrimp. I could not find liquid fry food or I probably would have went with that.

Gradually I would fill the tank a little more, and then the next week a bit more, now it's almost full to the top.

If you fill the tank too full to start off with, the fish will not be able to handle the weight of the water.

Another thing to really watch is your water quality. Make sure to syphon off any old food in the tank. The fry will die easily if your water parameters are not perfect.

Feed them at least 3 times a day, although they will survive with two feedings a day.

Thank you very much for the information.

I just am in a little frenzy since I got caught off guard.

During which stage can I use the LIQUIFRY? It is actually the first Fry food I could find at the LFS. I will definitely try your other suggestions as well.

Does the breeding session happen in a matter of hours or over several days? Or is spawning happen in spurts over a few days?

Some of the posts from the past I read stated that eggs quantitys are in the hundreds while the Ranchus I have are only laying a few handfulls.

My male and female Ranchu are only 3.5 inches, it seems to me that they may be only 1 year old and underdeveloped. Can problems arise from this?

Also, I read in a past thread that the female may get EGG BOUND? WHat does that mean?

As soon as the fry are free swimming. When they no longer need to stick to the sides of the glass etc. For the first few days, they have their yolk sac for nourishment sp.

It depends on the fish. Mine only layed eggs the one time. Other people have fish drop eggs more often.

As I understand it, the first spawn is *usually* not massive. I have no idea how many eggs my fish layed, but I only found about 12. It was their first spawn. There will probably be more eggs next time.

The problems most often seen are : not many eggs are layed, many eggs unfertilized, and the fry can be weak or have a larger amount of deformities. Now don't be worried about *deformities* because that can mean a lot of things. A single anal fin for example, or mismatched fins, things that *pet* owners do not care about.

Someone may be able to explain it better. But to me, it means that the fish has an egg impaction. She is full of eggs, but unable to release them. It can be very uncomfortable, and she may rest on the bottom. Fasting the fish usually causes the eggs to be reabsorbed and the problem is solved.

Thanks for the detailed help!!! smile.gif

Just a little update. The eggs were NOT fertilized. Roughly 35-40 in total.

But the behaviour, seems to continue. This past weekend they were at it again. But I thought the food had done something to the water and it was about time for there regular water change and gravel cleaning so before I new it and noticed I had clean out all the eggs from the tank. I guess. The cloudiness was milt from the male!!!!!!

Will the couple in my SIG be able to mate again this season. It seems they want to. Right now I am buying Breeding MOPS just in case they do it again. I guess third time is a charm????? Right????
