Petro (my betta) is now in a 10 gallon tank.. Because it is bigger are there any small fish that could room with him ? I asked this a while back but cant find the thread. Sorry

What I've got for my 10 gallon is: 1 male betta, 4 neon tetras
and 3 cory catfish. The betta cruises the top, the tetras are
midlevel and the catfish work the bottom. I know this doesn't
work for every tank, but it does work for me. wink.gif My betta
hasn't really bothered anyone, just checks them out to see
if they're 'ok' <_<

Flashback to 1964: When I was 8, I got a betta who lived for nearly 3 years in a planted 10 gallon show tank with a cory, an angelfish, two tiger barbs, several small neons, and an oto. Occasional short-term visitors included mollies, platies, goldfish, a couple of hatchet fish, and other poor creatures that we didn't know would not fit in or would push the little corner filter over the brink.

Now I live where water is too hard and the pH too high for the tetras and angels. It's really too hard for bettas, too. I will have to do some research before I know who to put with my recently rescued betta. (This is only the 2nd one I;ve ever had.)

One thing I remember distinctly... Tiger barbs BITE. As in all the other fish. They were cute but pretty awful to the others in the tank. They tore the bettas fins, fatally beat up some glass cats, and ate a hole right through my beloved big angelfish. I was 8, and didn't know I should separate them from their victims, or to keep them in larger groups. I hope I never see another one in a tank with gentle slow-moving fish like angels and bettas.

put a bunch of female bettas with it, but never more than 1 male or they will compete over the females

I would put a shoal of peaceful tetras such as neons, cardinals or rummynoses. You could also put harlequin rasboras. I also have had white cloud mountain minnows in with bettas. I know that most books call them cold water fish, but they will live comfortably at tropical temperatures.

Also, as others have mentioned a little group of 3 corys would be nice.

One inch of fish per gallon for tropicals. With the small tetras you can stretch that a bit smile.gif

Oh, definitley put neon tetras in there, and maybe a cute little yo-yo loach.
The neons are soooo pretty with the betta!

I thought you couldn't put males with other males OR females... Am i wrong?

the male needs females to mate so yea the male might have lots of fun getting each female pregnant rofl3.gif

I don't think it is a good idea to put male and female bettas together in a 10 gallon tank (unless you are purposely breeding them and then you would remove the female immediately after the eggs are laid). The male can be very aggressive and can kill the female.

All my male bettas are housed along with a pair of dwarf african frogs. My one betta "Turk" actually lives with a pair of frogs and a pair of dojo loaches. They all seem to be content. I have 4 bettas, and none of them appreciated having regular fish living with them.
