Hi there guys.

Ive been bugging my mum for a pond for ages! as some of you may already no. Well its come 2 the stage where i have now finished school for 2weeks because its our 'easter break' so hopefully (fingers crossed) ill be able 2 start planning my pond.

I want a pond that is around 70-100gallons.

I was thinking about getting one of these ponds Click here but not that exact same one. ill be getting it from a differant place wink.gif

I need to no anything about ponds...

How long do you leave it before adding fish?
Plants?
Do you need to add anything 2 the water? (condtioning drops or anything)

P.s Im thinking about getting 2 shubunkins, 2 commons and one or two special fish (you no how you walk into the shop and just cant leave without one certain fish? well thats what i mean lol )

And i have a question about my rabbit. He runs freely in the garden during the day and hes a nosey little thing, so im worrid that he might like to take a dive lol.GIF im going to get one of those plastic nets to go over the pond (to keep leaves from going in) because i have a big tree over my garden. do you think that would be enough?

I have got a picture of my garden at the end of this post, do you think a reasonable sized pond could fit in that space? it could go anywhere behind the washing line (the thing covered in green plastic) but it cant take up all that room because thats our main garden (not that big i no lol.GIF ) approx how many gallon pond do you think i could fit in that space? tongue.gif

Thanks for reading this post. and i appreciate any answers very much

You can fit loads and loads of gallons in that space.
I all depends how deep and how wide and how long
you make it.

What type of fish are you putting into this pond?

If you are worried about your rabbit, why don't you get a trough or tub and make an above ground pond. They come in sizes that you are wanting. Just a thought. There are members on here who have them set up. Maybe they could send pics of theirs for idea. I have a 500 gallon pond in the ground. Also of it is just trial and error. I lost the first two bunches of fish I put it. They were small feeders so I don't know if they were sickly to start with or if it was the water. Good luck.

Yes i would like one of those big tubs. But i dont think i have ever seen any round where i live, i will have 2 keep a look out sad.gif

I want something that is the best for me 2 do, because i want to do it myself (with no help from my parents) so then i have something to be proud of.

Tonya,

one concern I have, that liner looks like the thin plastic stuff (it's shiny which tells me it's not EPDM)? You are better off to go with the 45 mill EPDM liner. The problem with the other liner is it doesn't last very long. The thicker the liner the better off you are and the longer it'll last.

Just my thoughts on this.

Im not sure. I just gathered it would be ok because i no another member of the board that had the same liner at there old house smile.gif

it worked fine for me tanya. we doubled it over i think just in case there was a puncture but you could use something other than the liner.
Black oranda
Doubleing it would be the best thing to do but it
will fall down to the same price as the better liner.
So i think that you should get the thicker one.

Not everyone may agree with me, but I have always used a tarp from nooppee. They are very cheap and last for several years. I line the hole with newspaper or old carpet to avoid a rock or root from putting ahole in it.

Till now, everyone is still talking about the "hole in the ground". THAT is not a fish pond. When are considerations to be made as to 1) wiring? 2) Proper filtration unit (a "waterfall" is not a filter!), 3) Pump size to run the pond. (in small ponds, u should turn over the volume or water at least 4 times an hour thru a filter... mechanical and biological filter, 4) possibly consider a UV steriliser if it's outdoors in a sunny area (if not, be prepared for a long time with thick green "pea soup" water.

Outdoor ponds are not like indoor aquariums. Set up a hole in the ground and the water will go a pea soup green.... Not a pretty sight.

Why not spend the time and money getting a bigger aquarium instead?

I have a filter and pump and still have pea soup. It is a battle that I have lost. But I still enjoy my pond and have decided the fish like the "pea soup" better, it protects them from predators and the direct sun pounding down on them.
Tanya_woz_ere
wow that is such a pretty pond it looks amazing wink.gif
Lachfa
Thanks - I need to get new pics of it. That one is a few years old. I'll get some in a month or so when things are looking their best.
Black oranda
I just recently finish reading a book about ponds and they say
it is best to only use one sheat of pond plastic liner.
But you should always shop for the best quality and not for the
price.

You have a lovely pond Lachfa
