Does having cloudy water always mean a bacteria bloom or can it happen by just overfeeding OR does overfeeding cause a bacteria bloom? my tank is always clear and the params are usually good- 0ammonia 0 nitirites. i noticed cloudy water one day after feeding breakfast of freeze dried blood worms. i usually have no problem with this because my fish eat it all up like pigs. the water is still cloudy two days later and I noticed my ammonia went up to .25 hmmm....

so i did about a 10% water change last night ( i had to wait for my water to settle 24 hrs) and this AM it is a little better, but not like it usually is. I've cut down their feeding to one meal a day and will do another water change tonight. Are bacteria blooms dangerous?? and if they are, in what way? how do you treat them other than with daily small water changes?

Sounds like something has caused your tank to start another nitrogen cycle. When that happens, pollutants will not get neutralized as they normally would and cause the water to turn cloudy.

Try to find out what may have caused your tank to begin cycling. unsure.gif

I agree, did you clean filters, gravel, anything in the tank....If you can tell us what you have done to the tank in the last week, also if you added another fish in there?

no added fish, no added salt (sounds like a weight watchers plan) lol
BUT i did start adding stress zyme along with the stress coat that i use. that could definately have started this whole thing with the bacteria clouding up the water. the only thing i did differently other than that is that I overfed on the blood worms and flakes on a few occasions (duh, which i'm realizing now what happened as I type...the bacteria plus added food ....)
BUT last night, i took apart the filters and when i lifted up the bag, a whole bunch of brownish black cloudy water came pouring out. I noticed that the filters were clogged too, they weren't spouting correctly (coming out the other side, not the water flow side.) SO i took a few gallons of water out of the tank and i rinsed the filter cartridges in the tank water squeezed them and the sponges out and put them back in. changed about 15-20% of the water too and have limited feeding to about once a day (cut portions in half) it really seems like i had a bacteria bloom. i think it was the overfeeding along with stress zyme. well, anyway, this morning i noticed the water was really clearing up and i will do the same cleaning process tonight.
thanks guys for helping me talk this out. smile.gif smile.gif
