There are a bunch of tetras that I like and would love to have a school of them with my goldfish. Do tetras go well with goldfish?
koko
I think your goldfish would have them for lunch ohmy.gif

Tetras are pretty small, and a good rule is not
to put any thing smaller then tthe goldfish
mouths into the tank because they may become lunch
like koko said.

But im not 100% sure. But don't tetras go very fast?
Another thing is that they are tropical fish.
Thelonious
Umm,Tetras Are Tropical.
So I Dont Think They Would Go Well.
Plus,Like Koko Said...Your Goldfish Will Have Them For Lunch.
Hope This Helps smile.gif

Oh well. Goldfish would have tetras for lunch. Maybe I should serve them on a cracker for them? rofl3.gif

I have not had experience in keeping them together, but I have read a bit about it.

Goldfish (especially fantails) do best in a tank heated to tropical temperatures (74-78°F), so it isn't the tropical vs. coldwater issue. After all, bristlenose and rubbernose plecos are tropical!

I don't believe the goldfish would eat them because tetras are way too fast and skittish to be caught. After all, they are about the same size as Otos and that's one of the fish Koko has listed on the Compatable fish page!

It is the fast and skittish behavior of the tetras that make them a bad tank mate, as it stresses the slow and easygoing goldfish. In addition to that, tetras are nippy. (For example, Pirahnas are a type of tetra!) It is likely that the tetras will nip the long flowing fins of the goldfish. So it's the other way around as to who will eat who for lunch! smile.gif

I found out from experience that goldfish will definitely eat tetras. I temporarily kept my two goldies in my tropical tank, and my tetra population dropped dramatically! I had to buy more tetras after I moved the goldies to their own tank.
And their temperature requirements are different; tetras need warmer water than goldies.
FishFace
You should never mix tropicals with coldwater....That includes PLECOS, OTOS,anf Loaches.
The tetras would definately be eaten.

I don't know what you're basing that information on. You're just wrong. You just named everything on Koko's compatible fish page. Everything on there is tropical or sub tropical.

The CORRECT statement is tropical fish should not be kept in an unheated tank.

All of the fish on the compatible fish page can live fine in 74-78°F, as can goldfish. As long as the tank is heated and regulated at this temperature, they'll do fine. Fantail goldfish in fact are not as hardy in very cold water as their common counterparts, and it's recommended they be kept in a heated tank.

If what you're saying is true, all of the tropical fish in many a member's goldfish tanks should be dead.

Thanks for all the kind words, but everything I have posted is stuff I read about or learned through my own *short* experience in the hobby. I'm no expert or professional!

I also don't have the time and patience to give a moderator position the work that it really warrants! blink.gif

Honorary person in charge of Compitable fish lol?
Black oranda
tongue.gif I've saw some lovely looking tetras.
But tetras arn't for me.
Lovely_Goldfish
if one wants tetras just get them their own 10 gallon tank, heck they can even live in your tiny 3 or 6 gallon eclispe system tank. they generally dont grow over an inch so 5 in a 3, 10 in a 6 will do

Yea Tetras are great. I love the way they move and their colours are great, especially in light. If only I didn't have my goldfish I would have a tank full of tetras <_<

Do Tetras require an air pump or can they live happily with just a filter and a heater??
Kev
happily with filter, heater and weekly small water changes to keep the oxy level up smile.gif
Stubbsy
Cheers Kev.

I think tetras also prefer slightly acidic, softer water than goldies need. That may be more responsible for missing tetras than goldfish snacking on them....

I'm a big fan of mountain minnows myself. They are schoaling fish that are very hardy and thrive in the same parameters as goldfish. My 9 have been through a lot and none of them have been chased by my fish (although that could be that all of mine are telescopes and probably need glasses lol.GIF )

Good one Banjo. I agree, Pelvis for HONORARY person in charge, maybe you can just be like a forum expert, like a golf pro at a golf course. You are very knowledgable Pelvis.
