I have a 22 gallon tank (with excellent filtration/airation) with two 3" sized redcap orandas. Would a 6"+ sized axolotl make a good tankmate, or would the two pick on each other? (Axolotls don't like having their gill-feathers nibbled at). <_<

Also, would three clown loaches of 1.5" size be ok with the orandas? smile.gif

I don't know about how to take care of the Axolotl's but if they don't like to be nipped at I would suggest not having them in there, goldfish will nip at anything.

Clown loaches are a nono, since goldfish are messy and like the colder end of the water, they wouldn't go well together. Clown loaches need plenty of hiding spots, warm water and are a scaleless fish. sad.gif

Yeah, I have a larger tank for tropicals, but it has a great BIG dirty ol' lake catfish in it that would eat the small loaches. Once the clowns get big enough not to fit in the catfish's mouth, I'll introduce them into that tank, but at the moment, being summer here - the water in the goldfish tank sits on 27 degrees celsius (I think that's 80 degrees fahrenheit) - which is a little cooler than room temperature.

They tend to hide in the ceramic log/stump ornament at night and not bother the orandas. They are fun to watch though with the goldfish.

One thing I was wondering though, are clown loaches fin-nippers? I noticed one of my orandas has a clean split on his tail fin. I've sometimes seen the loaches "tickling" the goldie's fins with their whiskers, but the goldfish don't freak out when they do it.

As for the axolotl keeping, a book at the library on their care (and several websites around) say they can be kept quite well in a large clear plastic tub until you can afford another tank setup. smile.gif

yeah, im getting an axolotl in a couple of weeks so ive swatted up on them. they cant be kept with goldies (as convenient as it may be) because fish find their gills a very attractive looking meal and although they can grow back, it is very stressful on the poor thing.
