Uhg....I changed my 30 gallon tank last night. 40 % change with well water that had been sitting out 48 hrs with an airstone....and the ammonia reading has gone from a 0 to a .25!!!! What is going on?? The fresh water was treated with Amquel plus while sitting out. The water is now really cloudy. What the heck do I do?
ali
T he water change must have caused an bacterial bloom and with that bacterial bloom the ammonia will usually spike for a bit. <_<

Do a 10% or 20% water change right now and dont feed your goldies for a day or two so the bacteria can seddle back down smile.gif

I'am sure others have suggestions aswell. smile.gif

How long has this tank been set up?

It has been running for a month and there have been 2 small goldies in it for a week. Should I do a water change now or wait 24 hrs for the well water to settle?

Sushi - Have you tested the water you were adding to the tank? Our tap water here has an ammonia of .1 right out of the tap! That would make a big difference if you changed 40% of your water out with water that has ammonia in it already!

I don't know if wells can be the same way as tap water, though.

Just checked and ammonia reads 0 out of tap!

I would do a 20% water change and not feed them for 2 days as I said before. wink.gif
Then your ammonia will go down.

That or your tank is still cycling sad.gif

I will do a water change but I guess I should wait 24 hrs for the new water to sit out right?

What 24 hours then test the water if its still at that level do a 10-20% water change, dont mess with the filter or the gravel hun biggrin.gif

I have been doing daily water changes of 25% and today I did a 50% change. The ammonia is still the same! .25! I am treating the fish for ich but now the whole tank is filled with white stringy stuff to the point that it is cloudy and there is a film on everything. What should I do?

I saw something that helps with cycling at a lsf a while back (it's called "Cycle" and recommended to use for water changes I think) - not sure if others will recommend this usage...but if it'll help with introducing bacteria to break down the ammonia, maybe that's an option? Sorry for not being more informative, it's just something I saw a while back, but haven't used.

cycle is just diluted bacteria (not all of it is the nitrifying bacteria that is beneficial) which will help to speed up the process of breaking down the ammonia and cycling a tank, but will not help you "overnight" (as some pet store owners tell you) in your current situation.
Your Amquel also doesn't "remove" ammonia like it states, as it was explained to me, it just puts a figurative "coat" around the ammonia molecules to protect the fish from imminent harm. It doesn't remove it.
The white things in your tank sound like those tank worms that we were just discussing a while back. if they are what it sounds like they are, their presense is due to dirty gravel and they are not harmful to your fish. to get rid of them, members suggested a gravel vac and the goldies will eat them for dinner! but since you are having a spike, i dont' know if gravel vac'ing would be a good idea right now. maybe you could stir the gravel with your hand (don't worry just pretend the worms aren't there lol) and stir them up so your goldies can remove them for you. I also wouldn't take so much water out when you're doing your daily water changes as you are removing the beneficial bacteria that the tank needs to break down that ammonia.
Are you using medication for the ich treatment, or just aquarium salt? how big is your tank, how many fish, how often do you clean? what kind of filter do you have? i would work on water quality for now and then the medicine later. medication usually doesn't work in poor water conditions. ......answer these questions, and i'm sure someone will be right up to help you out further.....keep us updated. good luck
