Full Version: Filters That Won't Kill Small Fish

I've got a 70gallon tank with a 175 gallon per hour biowheel filter, I DID have another 150 g/hour underwater cannister filter as well but it literally sucked in 2 of my neon tetra's within the first day of turning it on! As a result of temporary removing this filter, my ph dropped 1.2 to 6.2, the water is green, and there are brown (algae?) spots on the side of the tank! sad.gif((

As many of you may know, tetra's are quite small fish. Does anyone have any recommendation on filters (besides hanging filters) that won't suck small fish in? Especially off this list? http://www.aquaria.com.au/db/shopping/?db=...tion=Freshwater - the company doesn't reply to my e-mails! sad.gif

Much appreciated!

Why not simply cover your intake tubes with a nylon stocking or, for really small fish, a piece of filter sponge that you slit to fit over the intake? This will allow the filter to do its job, but the fish will not get stuck to it or sucked up in it.

Hi, Skaven, and welcometo.jpg!
The link doesn't seem to come up, what company is it? I only have experience with the power filters, the kind that hang behind your tank, and use aquaclear on all my tanks. When I have smaller fish around that can't stand up to the suction of the filter, I put an aquarium sponge over the intake tube of that filter, so they don't end up inside that thing. Aquaclear also has an adjustable flow, I can turn it down a bit.
I think with the biowheel filters you also can put something over the intake tube....
With canister filters, is there a way to slow the suction down? Anything that can be stuffed inside the filter, or a way to adjust the flow? I heard some filters allow that, but I never did have one. Maybe somebody else will help you there!...smile.gif
