Hiya guys wav.gif

I have some green and some brown algea in my 55g tank
I want to keep the green algea since it is good for the tank and it harbors
bacteria and let the goldies have a snack from time to time.

But what about BROWN algea Should I keep that in the tank? Does it do the
same as green algea does? Does it harbor beneficial bacteria? Is it good for the
tank or is it bad for the tank? Should I scrap the brown algea off?

Just wanted to ask because I Just now starting to see algea in my 55g which is the first time i ever had algea in years!. I just dont know if the brown algea is good for my tank or if it is bad for the tank. wall.gif

appreciate any help Thanx!! biggrin.gif

The brown algae is not harmful in the tank. You can remove it from the front and sides and leave it on the back wall. It is using nutrients in the water, just as the green algae does. You could try changing your fluorescent tube and see if that helps. Sometimes as the tube ages, the light from it drops enough to foster brown algae rather than green.

So just scrap the sides and front of the tank like i have been doing.
ok i can do that lol. Thanx touchofsky!!!
So, what is the use for the algea in the back of the tank is it just to harbor
bacteria? or is there another value to it that I dont know about?

It will use excess nutrients in the water and produce oxygen, just like any other type of plant.

Is your tank a new tank or an older set up? Sometimes a new tank will go through a phase of brown algae.
