Full Version: Apple Snails Hatching

My first batch of Apple Snail eggs started to hatch last night.
I have the eggs on a piece of styrofoam floating in a 2 litre jar containing river sand and gravel. The jar top is covered with a plastic bag to maintain humidity.
I have used a small plastic household spray bottle to lightly spray the clutch with a fine mist of water also.
Will the small snails make their own way from the styrofoam into the water, or should I give them a gentle push? I don't want to drown them. Any additional advise would also be appreciated.

When I bred mine, I kept them in a ziploc container and when I saw they hactched, I put them in the water myself. I suppose either way would be alright. You could put them in the water, or let them crawl out themselves. I do not think you'll drown them. I mean, a few are apt to die, but for the most part, they won't drown.

So, I guess it is a personal choice... unless someone else thinks otherwise. B)

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to get them selfs
into the water by them selfs.....
well congradz with the new Apple snail eggs biggrin.gif
Im sure either way is alright.
hope they get to grow big.

Thank you, Florissa and Black Oranda.
Most of the hatchlings have made their own way into the water and the remaining ones received a little push from me with a damp cotton bud. They are all clinging to the side of the jar (beaker) and on the Azolla Pinnata I have floating on the top of the water. I still have about five clutches of eggs laying on the styrofoam raft, but they should not hatch for at least another week. The eggs in question took 23 days to hatch.
I noticed that one of my mature snails was laying another clutch of eggs on the glass lid of the snail tank so I will have to decide whether to remove them and also put them on a raft in another container. This might make it easier to do any water changes. Thank you once again.

I would be careful about how many cluthes you hatch. I've been lucky with mine because I can give them away to a local fish store when they grow a bit but the more snails you have the more water changes you need to do. All they do is eat and poop. I find that my snail tank needs to be cleaned out much more often then my fish tanks do. In the pond they are fine but inside in tanks...YUCK!

They should all find their way to the water fine by themselves. Don't be surprised if a couple of them die...just like with fry, not all of them are destined for this world.

Thanks for the advise Debi0825. I will certainly keep it in mind. I did read somewhere that they are edible, however I have never tried it. I did try frogs legs years ago but didn't like them.
