Most tanks its not tape its a hard plastic that holds a partial structure of the tank. Also keeps you from getting cut from the edges of the glass

it's just a normal glass tank, 4 sides and a bottom, ledges for a hood, with a black strip about 2 inches wide rinning across the top of the front sheet of glass.

it looks sort of like electrical tape/duct tape, in black.

Sounds easy enough to take off...sounds to me like its gaffers tape. (tape used to hold stuff like wires and such down on TV and movie productions) If its not holding anything structurally on your tank, and the tank is glass, just pull it off, and scrape the rest of it off with a razor blade, then replace if you want. It sounds to me like it was to keep the water line from showing at lower levels due to evaporation.

dont try pulling the old stuff off m8, its sealed in at the edges... just run some insulation tape or black duct tape accross it to make it look nice again
